Yesterday, I mentioned how young women from other states working in a footwear shop in Chennai earn around ₹35,000 to₹40,000 a month, including incentives.

I visit a popular salon chain. My regular hairstylist is from West Bengal and has been living in Chennai for nearly a decade. His wife, also from Bengal, works as a hairstylist in a different chain. The couple has one daughter, who studies in their hometown and stays with her grandparents.

Together, they earn more than ₹1 lakh a month from salaries, incentives, and customer tips. He says he never imagined he could earn this much. Over the years, they have saved around ₹25 lakh, excluding their provident fund.

The salon chains they work for regularly provide training on new products and trends. This continuous upskilling keeps them professionally updated and employable.

He mentioned that although no one in Chennai speaks Hindi, no one has ever treated him badly for being from another state. He is grateful that Chennai has positively transformed his family’s financial trajectory.

There is a huge perception gap between the reality of how welcoming and opportunity rich Chennai is and the false narratives being spread about it.

Former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa was initially against the Metro project. Once she came to power in 2011, her government put the project on hold.

Experts and officials eventually convinced her of its benefits for Chennai. She subsequently went ahead with the project and actively supported its implementation.

In fact, the very last public function she attended was the inauguration of a metro corridor extension.

There is nothing wrong with changing one’s mind.

After DMK president @mkstalin took oath in 2021, he started referring to the central government as the “Union” government. At that time, BJP Sanghis used to trend Kongu Naadu.

Now the same Coimbatore has been betrayed by the BJP-led Union government. There is complete silence from that Sanghi group.

The Union government rejected Coimbatore metro, stating that the population is below 2 million.

But BJP union government has approved metro rail projects for Agra (1.6 million), Patna (1.7 million) and Bhopal (1.88 million), all with populations less than 2 million. Yet it rejected Coimbatore, which has a higher population, and Madurai, which has a comparable population.

Union BJP government has ignored our Tier II non-state capital cities while approving them for other states, including Agra and Kanpur in UP, Nagpur and Pune in Maharashtra, Indore in MP, and Surat in Gujarat.
