Vedanta Desikan was one of the best embodiments of the core Sanatana ideal called Aparigraha or covetousness. He expounded it in a celebrated verse:
न मे पित्रार्जितम् किन्चित् न मया किन्चिदार्जितम् |
अस्ति मे हस्तिशैलाग्रे वस्तु पैतामहम् धनम् ||

Pics from this year's Sankranti Paarvettai (Hunt) Utsava of Kanchi Varadarajaswamy temple.
As a part of this Utsava, the deity is taken in a palanquin to a hillock in Palayaseevaram Village at a distance of 17 km from Kanchi. The Royal preceptor of Vijayanagara, the Tatachar of Kanchi, walks the entire 17 km stretch with the deity along with his shishyas, while chanting the stotras of Sri Vedanta Desika.
Ravi and Ritik Dixit are blinded and sing bhajans on road to fund their education. But they earn only 100-150 RS from doing bhajans on roads. They live in a rented house and want to study more but due to bad financial condition they are not able to pursuer their education further. Ritik wants to see a doctor for his eyes. Shridhar Sewa will fund their education and try to give monthly expenses till they finish their studies. Also trying to fund their medical expenses.
Please donate for them on this Diwali. We make their lives better.

Hi , this is an incident which I had faced recently . I am currently at Texas A&M doing my Masters . We people along with the Hindu Yuva group organize , participate , help students get to know regarding their culture and about our festivals etc. This Sunday on the occasion 1/n
"Am I better off overseas or should I have stayed back home?"
- by an Indian who migrated to the US for a living
We come to the USA with monetary and career goals. This process takes a minimum of 4-5 years, including completing a degree, OPT, securing a stable job, etc.
Then we fight to protect the life we have built. This involves dealing with the H1B visa process, the green card backlog, and other related challenges.
During this time, we often get married and have children.
The next decade is about stabilization and achieving a semblance of a normal life: fighting for a green card, buying a home, and building a network of friends.
Meanwhile, our parents in India keep getting older. Cousins get married at inconvenient times. "Hey, your marriage is in March? My kids will be in school, I can't make it." Grandparents pass away when we have H1B stamping issues and can't travel. Fathers have heart attacks while our companies are laying off employees at a fervent pace.
We miss some or all of these events. India doesn’t care. Life goes on for them. Nephews and nieces grow up not knowing us well. They probably know us as the "uncle and aunt who bring phones" every couple of years.
Our children lack the meaningful extended family we had. No grandparents, uncles, aunts, or cousins. We become their entire world. Your spouse often becomes your only friend in a foreign land. She, too, is as confused as you are. When you argue with her for two days, who can she talk to about it? There's no one to share with.
The friends network you built will soon be beset with jealousy and complaints. Soon, you realize people are not as innocent as they seem. Class and divisions start to appear based on who got a green card first, who bought a big house, who has a Tesla, who became a manager, who has a furnished basement, and so on.
You will be caught in existential questions. Will my son or daughter bring a girl/boyfriend home at age 16?
You will turn to culture and home. You will involve yourself in Regional(Telugu/Kannada/Tamil) Community, Indian associations, temples, volunteering, etc. You will change your political beliefs based on your situation. You either become a liberal, thinking all is fine, or you become a conservative, thinking I should resist all this.
You go to India and find that you don't belong there. All your relatives have changed. You have changed. Uncles and aunts have died. Nephews and nieces are unrecognizable. The streets and city that you grew up in are unrecognizable.
You come back and slip into your known world, keeping on working, never knowing the answer to the question: "Am I better off here or should I have stayed back home?"
The answer to this question remains unknown.
Today in the #Valmiki#Ramayana a host of rishis headed by markandeya meet vashishta urging him to install a successor quickly
They go on to describe what happens to a janapada without a king
Two particularly struck a chord
In a janapada without a king girls don't come to play in the gardens in the evening decked in gold
नाराजके जनपदे तूद्यानानि समागताः । सायाह्ने क्रीडितुं यान्ति कुमार्यो हेमभूषिताः ॥
Atheists who would otherwise not surface for fear of the rajas danda would freely disturb society
ये हि सम्भिन्नमर्यादा नास्तिकाशिछन्नसंशयाः । तेऽपि भावाय कल्पन्ते राजदण्डनिपीडिता: ॥ ३२ ॥
An interesting word used is araajakam - in Tamil அராஜகம் is used to denote lawlessness - when there are no good rulers
Irrespective of the yuga peaceful prosperous societies depend on rulers who provide stability law and order are strong and instill fear among trouble makers.
This sarga is a must read for conscientious citizens as we choose in the coming #Elections2024
In light of recent tragic deaths, I notice a lot of Indian students in the US and their parents worried about their safety and security. Understandably so. Please remember a few things: United States is a continent sized country and most of it IS safe. Large urban clusters around downtowns in large cities are sometimes crime infested and local gangs abound. Few precautions are necessary : 1) Avoid downtowns, gas stations, shady areas especially in the night. Move around in groups or at least with couple of friends in these areas if you must. 2) Try finding jobs in your universities. Gas station jobs are not safe. If you must work in a store, try suburban areas. 3) Find a local mentor, guardian, temple, Indian associations and remain in touch with them. 4) Reach out to Indian consulate for any help needed 5) Try to work only legal jobs. Make sure your visa status is in good standing. 6) If anybody needs personal counseling, feel free to reach out.

I was in 10th grade when the first Kar Seva happened. Our place is close to Ayodhya on the other side of Sarayu. About a couple dozen Kar Sevaks who had come from different places - Karnataka, Maharashtra, Telangana, some from Western UP - lived for days at my parents home. Like many Hindu families who were hosting unknown Kar Sevaks who were stranded because Mulayam govt had shut down everything.
My school, like all schools, was made into a temporary prison by UP police. They would catch and put any incoming Kar Sevaks there. My mother and grandmother like other ladies of the neighborhood would every day cook in large quantities for sending the food there. For several days.
There was police curfew / 144. People could not walk together. I and a friend of mine would go to a shopkeeper’s house, through back-alleys to buy rice, veggies, oil etc. There were continuous Rama Keertanas which could be heard everywhere. From homes, deserted bus and railway stations, and in those temporary prisons.
No newspapers were delivered. Electricity was shut down too so no TV either. All of us, family along with Kar Sevaks, would gather around radio transistor to hear the news. Back then BBC or Voice of America stations were considered more trust worthy to know what was going on.
Some Kar Sevaks would run away from prisons at night. Some staying at our place also would leave determined to go to Ayodhya. Roads were closed. Boatmen could carry them across Sarayu and drop in the outskirt villages from where they could walk to Ayodhya. Locals Kar Sevaks would guide them then come back for next batch. My older cousin was one of them.
I remember one batch from our home left at night. We didn’t have much rations at home - my mom cooked Halwa for them and sent them off by applying Tilak to them with prayers. They spoke broken Hindi.
3O Oct and 2 Nov killings happened, I remember the outrage, sadness, loss. I have kept the Swatantra Bharat of that day.
Today has become a reality because of bravery and sacrifice of countless known and unknown Hindus. It was a freedom movement.

“Saketh” as everyone knows refers to Ayodhya. Thyagaraja Swami refers to “Saketharama” in many compositions such as Chalamelara, Chakkani Raja, Badalika Dheera; Sakethapura in Ennalu, Saketha Nagara in Karu Baru, Saketha Rajakumara in Makelara, Saketha Nikethana, etc. (1/n)
The rumour that a cyclone is coming next week towards Chennai is baseless. Kindly don't believe in such msgs. There may be some UAC / Low Pressure Area in the Arabia sea around 10th and that will move away from the Indian Coast. This will have nothing to do with Chennai.
