Aware of Somaliland's strategic location and its consistently pro-Western orientation, U.S. military and security officials have periodically engaged with their Somaliland counterparts on regional security issues. These discussions reflect Somaliland's importance in efforts to counter terrorism, piracy, and threats to maritime security in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, the Gulf of Aden, and the western Indian Ocean.
Against that backdrop, Rahm Emanuel's repeated mockery and dismissal of Somaliland is difficult to reconcile with America's long-term strategic interests. A politician aspiring to lead the United States should recognize the value of potential security partners, not publicly belittle them. Undermining a territory that contributes to regional stability and cooperation against Al-Shabaab, piracy, and Iran-backed Houthi threats sends the wrong message at a time when the Horn of Africa has become one of the world's most strategically significant regions.
