If the allegations against the PML-N MPA involve threats, bullying, harassment, intimidation, assault or mental torture, then those are serious matters that must be independently examined and determined on the basis of evidence. At the same time, these allegations should not be mixed with discussions regarding any alleged personal relationship, friendship or exchange of gifts between the two individuals. The existence of gifts, financial spending or personal closeness does not answer the separate question of whether intimidation, harassment or abuse occurred.
A woman cannot be treated as a commodity merely because someone claims to have spent money on her or given her gifts. Personal spending, emotional involvement or alleged generosity does not create ownership, entitlement or control over another human being. More importantly, the discussion regarding gifts is not even relevant to the present issue. Whether gifts were exchanged or not has no bearing on the determination of whether threats, harassment, bullying or coercion took place. These are legally and morally distinct matters. Ultimately, the only issue that requires determination is whether any threats, intimidation, harassment, bullying or abuse actually occurred. That is the central question. Public discourse has unnecessarily diverted attention toward irrelevant discussions about gifts and personal relations, despite the fact that such matters neither justify nor negate the alleged conduct. The focus should remain strictly on establishing the truth of the allegations through evidence and due process.

A little spoken of role, in this entire episode, has been of the current Deputy Chief of Mission of the US Natalie Baker. She has done incredible work in Islamabad and is a great diplomat.

In summary, Pakistan does both war AND diplomacy really well and that’s exactly how it should be.
