In 1977, even the great MGR could secure only 30.3% of the vote, despite being in an alliance with the Communists. In 1983, NTR emerged victorious when there was only one major competitor: the Congress. The kind of competition and resistance Vijay faced cannot be explained in simplistic terms.

Now, after becoming Chief Minister and providing a decent government despite his inexperience, CM Vijay is consolidating his position as the biggest mass leader Tamil Nadu has ever produced.
