@ashleycchenn @edavidsonhed I agree 100%. However, I do think that these options can definitely be generated with more careful major choices. A lot of athletes pick "easy" majors that make job hunting difficult after college. #ucr50 @edavidsonhed
basically 1% of college athletes go pro, so why is there not a stronger emphasis on career development to help athletes with the difficult transition of life after college #ucr50 @edavidsonhed
@e_cee007 @edavidsonhed Do you think that the strict dress code of college athletes is similar to an employee dress code? If so, since they're already being treated like employees, would you agree that college athletes should be paid and given benefits that employees receive? #ucr50 @edavidsonhed
the only thing that I see institutions changing is the infinitely increasing cost of higher ed... it seems like they charge an arm and a leg just so it seems like "free education" for athletes is more than enough compensation for their contributions #ucr50 @edavidsonhed
@oshirley5 @edavidsonhed change MUST happen, 100% agree with that! but the law has been in place for over 40 years, and the issue that it was supposed to fix is still an issue! what do you think needs to happen for some REAL gender equality to make its way into college sports? #ucr50 @edavidsonhed
Title IX supposedly banned discrimination based on sex in higher ed... and apparently, women having access to the BARE MINIMUM is supposed to make them happy??? women should be grateful that they even get to participate??? make it make sense! #ucr50 @edavidsonhed
@ZDeLaCruz11 @edavidsonhed I agree 100%! POC are exploited for their athletic talents, but have their intelligence questioned in the classroom bc of the color of their skin or their "athlete" status. What can universities do to eliminate this stigma? Would that even solve the problem? #ucr50 @edavidsonhed
to create a more positive cross-racial experience in intercollegiate athletics, educators and administrators must encourage student athletes to use their voices and platforms to fight against injustice and inequality #ucr50 @edavidsonhed
@vejar_julissa @edavidsonhed I agree 100% Julissa! I strongly believe that this lack of appreciation and respect lowers student-athletes' drive to excel in the classroom. It is very discouraging to think that so many people think you are lazy and dumb. #ucr50 @edavidsonhed
teachers still stereotype athletes as "dumb jocks"? i'm sorry, i thought the year was 2021, not the '80s... athletes aren't dumb anymore, what they are is busy... if teachers have an issue they should take it up with the coach or give these students a break! #ucr50 @edavidsonhed
@esald013 @edavidsonhed I agree 100%. Furthermore, how is it possible for athletes to manage their mental health and wellbeing when they are already so busy with sports and school? Suicide was the third leading cause of death of student athletes last year. Give these kids a break! #ucr50 @edavidsonhed
high school athletics serve as a pastime for students, or maybe even as a way for them to make friends... university athletics is where the fun ends, and where being an athlete essentially becomes the students' unpaid job #ucr50 @edavidsonhed
@SerenaAllen_ @edavidsonhed I think you're making a great point here. I think it's bc the Arts/Sciences or university's popularity isn't directly caused by Arts and Sciences, but rather by the performance and publicity of their sports teams. #ucr50 @edavidsonhed
Nick Saban (Alabama) makes $9.1 Million A YEAR... correct me if I'm wrong, but I have never seen Coach Saban suit up and play a snap of football for the Crimson Tide to help them win all those championships... PAY THESE PLAYERS!!! #ucr50 @edavidsonhed
@kmart073 @edavidsonhed I agree 100%. And to answer your question, student-athletes are expendable in the eyes of the NCAA and the multi-billion dollar universities that they play for. Once a their talent runs dry, they're tossed out like trash, leaving room for the next prospect. #ucr50 @edavidsonhed
interesting how the NCAA claimed that student-athletes would be "protected" from exploitation by pro/commercial enterprises... the only enterprise that exploits student-athletes is the NCAA and the member institutions that the student-athletes play for! #ucr50
