It’s a big day in the Schrock household. Today is the publication date for @lesliejz's 2nd book, Fertility Rules, billed as ”The Definitive Guide to Male and Female Reproductive Health”

We have two beautiful, awesome boys. Dylan is turning two next month, and TJ has just turned four. But like many couples the journey was challenging and complicated. Leslie had two miscarriages––one fairly late in the process––and even more tragically we were forced to terminate a pregnancy because of a fatal genetic defect.

TJ and Dylan’s journeys were themselves complicated. Both ended in c-sections. Leslie was inaccurately diagnosed with preeclampsia during TJs birth. While carrying Dylan Leslie developed placenta privia, a serious, anxiety-inducing condition that increases the chance of premature birth and severe bleeding. When the time came, we were forced to do an early emergency c-section, as Leslie when the time came *actually* developed preeclampsia a few weeks before the due date.

Our situation is not unique: lots of couples go through similar experiences. What stuck out to Leslie is how little it was talked about. I’ve talked to lots of men––both my friends and those who have reached out to me––who have experienced similar struggles, and how lonely they felt during the process. Lots of couples experience miscarriages and fertility issues, but it is mostly done in secret, or not discussed at all.

Leslie is looking to change the conversation on this topic and it’s more relevant than ever. Birth rates are collapsing across the world, both caused by and resulting in fundamental shifts in our environment, culture, and society. Couples are having children later in life and fertility issues are only increasing. And there is a shocking level of ignorance on these issues, both in the general populace and in the medical community.

I couldn’t be more proud of her. She has on her own become a world-leading expert in women’s health (the reviews from medical professionals of Fertility Rules are glowing) and the author of two world-class books, all while bearing the most of the burden of managing our home life and childcare. Her productivity, brilliance, and resilience continue to astound me.
