I enjoy the company of #computers because they're deaf to siren song. Despite their wondrous modernity, they mirror our primeval selves, and thus are of 'incalculable' value. As Asimov observed, they make us more human, not less.
Scientific literacy is the only brain-stuff that exists objectively, and is therefore impervious to panic and despair. We should care about science precisely because it doesn't care about us.
We may even judge of the degree of perfection to which a science has arrived by the facility with which it may be submitted to calculation.
