So true. Having anxiety and dread for medical apts. Trying to explain and get help without things being used against you, or just getting ignored. Exhausting.
There is a point in chronic pain where seeking medical care stops feeling reassuring.
It starts feeling risky.
You begin walking into appointments wondering what will be documented.
What will be misunderstood.
Whether admitting you’re scared will be mistaken for exaggeration.
Whether asking for help will make you look difficult.
Whether saying your medication works will somehow be used against you.
Whether showing distress makes you “unstable.”
Whether showing too little distress makes you “fine.”
So you start editing yourself.
You soften your language.
You leave things out.
You choose your words carefully.
You try to appear sick enough to be believed, but not so sick that you are judged.
And that is a terrible position to put a patient in.
Healthcare should not require performance.
Pain should not require persuasion.
And treatment should never hinge on a suffering patient’s ability to convince someone they are worthy of being believed.
September is National #Pain Awareness Month in the US - and @ForGrace is proud to be on the forefront to put a white-hot spotlight on #chronicpain as a major public health issue. This month, we launch a project to connect CP and #dementia https://t.co/S55ol4PRwz #LetsGo
“Every #chronicillness and pain patient does not know, from day-to-day, how they are going to feel when they wake up, and each day has to be taken as it comes. In many cases, they don’t know from minute to minute.” https://t.co/fLy5wADVOG @apainprincess#PainAwarenessMonth
Other people who have connective tissue disorders or autoimmune disorders: is it normal if u do 2 much (I cleaned the toilet) to get so fatigued that u can't think at all & get bad headaches if you try? My rheumatologist always looks at me like I have a 3rd head when I tell her.
Yes, animals eat other animals...
But they don't breed them
Force impregnate them
Milk them to death
Confine them to cages
Genetically manipulate them
Cook them to eat
We have a choice
“When we live with pain, we soon learn that everything we do comes with a cost… That cost is more pain, often accompanied by #fatigue. That lovely gift for simply having a shower, making a meal or visiting a relative can last for hours, days—even weeks.” https://t.co/Wwiho67EnH
Today is the anniversary of the day I brought home a little pup who became the best friend I ever had, and changed my life. You’re still missed pup. 💔😢
You learn how to live around symptoms.
You build routines around pain.
You figure out how to function through exhaustion.
What is harder to adapt to is the uncertainty.
The moment your body does something new, your mind starts asking whether this is just another bad day…
or the beginning of something worse.
That is the part chronic illness rarely lets you get comfortable with.
Not just the symptoms.
The waiting.
The wondering.
The constant question of what your body is going to do next.
“Those of us with #ChronicPain wake up every day with pain. This automatically causes a problem with the standard pain scale… Some of us never have a zero… People who don’t have chronic pain often have a hard time understanding that.” https://t.co/SOSQNNiPFZ #cpp
