26 July is #MangroveDay!
Mangroves contribute to the wellbeing, food security, & protection of coastal communities. Yet, they are being lost at a rate of 3-5 times higher than other forests.

The protest at COP28 by Licypriya Kangujam, a 12-year-old climate-justice activist from India, leads the frontpage of the Financial Times
Neatly illustrates why these stunts can have so much impact
Will be one of the defining images of this COP
It might be the time to remind all that ~90% of current CO2 emissions are due to fossil fuel burning.

We need #COP28 to deliver a phase out of fossil fuels. Don't we want a phase out of the climate crisis?
ANALYSIS: what impact will the #COP28 announcements make on closing the emissions gap?
Few of them will do so meaningfully.
Many either lack the ambition, clarity, coverage or accountability needed to make a difference /🧵

Massachusetts is the first state in the US requiring gas companies to phase down fossil gas for heating.
The state set out a clear path toward electrification of heating and could lead regulators in other states to follow suit.

Earth on verge of five catastrophic climate tipping points, scientists warn
Humanity faces ‘devastating domino effects’ including mass displacement and financial ruin as planet warms

Important new report: Just as in the IPCC, it shows that if we go beyond 1.5, we enter a high-risk zone of crossing tipping points. We need to move fast to avoid moving to a point where the Earth system takes over & pushed us in a direction with unmanageable conditions.

(A longer 🧵to follow)
The path to reaching net zero emissions from the energy sector & limiting global warming to 1.5 °C has narrowed.
But achieving these goals remains possible due to record growth of key clean energy technologies like solar PV & EVs.
