@MCCCANM First time I heard of the gouge was on a Naval Academy exchange tour in 1982. Also the term of “bilging” your classmate was used; the "bilge" is the lowest, dirtiest part of a ship's hull. To "bilge" someone means to sink them, sabotage them, or make them look bad.
