Spent the last 3 months building a custom Metal LLM runtime from scratch (with a C++ host file), finally beating PyTorch (both eager and compiled) by ~50% in total per-iteration wall time.

PyTorch is great for flexibility, but default ops on Metal/MPS leave a ton of performance on the table:

torch.compile attempts to write its own fused kernels based on Metal Performance Shaders, but they clearly aren't optimal
