Friends, colleagues and fans left flowers and photos at a memorial for the reporter and helicopter pilot that died when their chopper went down in Los Angeles Tuesday night.
The helicopter was covering news for TV station KNBC and their sister station Telemundo 52 when it crashed, killing reporter Eliana Moreno and pilot George Marciniw
The memorial was erected at Whiteman Airport, near the area Moreno and Marciniw parked before going up in the chopper.
Jake Asner is Moreno's former intern: “Just the nicest person you could ever meet. I mean, just the pure soul. ”
George Kapoyan is a long time friend of Marciniw, and said that being at the memorial helped him mourn: “Some kind of symbolism to be out here, you know, hoping he'll return. Just letting reality sink in. ”
Edy Gutierrez Mejia was killed in the parking lot where helicopter went down.
The NTSB is investigating the cause of the crash.

The NTSB held a briefing Wednesday afternoon on that deadly crash of a news helicopter in Los Angeles Tuesday night. The chopper was providing news coverage for KNBC and sister station Telemundo 52 when it went down, killing the pilot and a reporter along with a pedestrian on the ground. NTSB Investigator in Charge Fabian Salazar says the cause of the crash hasn't been determined (OC: accident fire"): “We are, um, combing the wreckage to the best of our ability to gather as much factual data as we can, even though the the wreckage did um um suffer through a post accident fire. ”
Salazar says a preliminary report on the crash is expected within 30 days.
Horrible! The KNBC/NBC4 NewsChopper4 went down around 7 p.m. on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, in Chatsworth while they were covering a separate fatal Metro bus–SUV collision. Both people on board were killed, along with a third person on the ground, identified as 29-year-old Edy Gutierrez Mejia. Two other people on the ground were hospitalized. Moreno and pilot George Marciniw did not survive the crash.
Moreno, known to many as “Eli in the heli,” was a longtime aerial reporter for NBC4 and Telemundo 52. Marciniw was a veteran pilot with thousands of flight hours. They had flown together since 2023. The NTSB is investigating; early reporting has noted warning sounds and a loss of power captured on the live feed shortly before impact.
