@MiguelMadeira11@edwest And does it anyway. If we were to move towards a purely utilitarian system ("you do dangerous things because you're too stupid to realise theyre dangerous, so we're going to lock you up for a long time"), it would be a radical change.
@MiguelMadeira11@edwest Thats the whole problem with a morality based criminal justice system. I think we'd all see someone who was too stupid to realise he might kill someone throwing a sofa over a balcony as less morally culpable that someone who is fully aware of the likely consequences
@ChrisToland68@Banda821011@PaulGrimshaw15 It appears they were caught bang to rights on CCTV. If you plead guilty at the first opportunity you get a third off your sentence. Its a no trainer for them.
@AsplinKevin@DPJHodges Ministers do make all politically significant decisions. If were saying civil servants made all ILR decisions, then it was because Braverman/Jenrick did not consider them politically significant.
@AsplinKevin@DPJHodges They were the ministers in charge. They could have directed that all applications for ILR be decided personally by them. If they left the decisions to civil servants thats their responsibility. Its a fundamental constitutional principle that ministers are responsible for
@DarrenJohnson66 Id also say the Restore candidate is pretty much from the same stable, but female. What would be quite interesting to know is whether she's disproportionately pulling female voters from Reforms self confessed sexist candidate.
@DarrenJohnson66 I dunno. Local white bloke with local accent who did well in the GE might have seen the optimum anti Restore candidate. The wider problem Reform have is their quick growth. A large proportion of their potential candidates are essentially angry local people .
@portraitinflesh I would have thought most catcalling was immature teenage boys to teenage girls. I think in 2026 the vast majority of adult males realise its not done.
@DarrenJohnson66 On the Restore vote, its essentially the old roughly 5% outright racist vote the BNP was getting 15 years ago. With the latters demise they reluctantly hitched themselves to Farages various vehicles. They were always likely to cut loose if an halfway credible racist party arrived
@DarrenJohnson66 Its interesting in that they have quite a few ex Tory MPs who you might have thought would be better candidates against someone who has been a professional politician for 25 years. One assumes they were scared of the "just Tories in disguise" attack
@portraitinflesh Restore are unapologetically going back to that. Any non white person would be automatically suspect as someone with no right to be in the country. Its frightening.
@portraitinflesh But the right tend to extend "waste" beyond technical inefficiencies to those taxis for Albanians. Both, of course, being drops in the ocean.
