@unormal Norton's Dome is a weird one: the Newtonian equations allow a ball at the top to spontaneously start rolling after an indeterminate amount of time (though this relies on the 2nd derivative being undefined at the apex) https://t.co/Dfu3Ie0f7J , https://t.co/ZQvzTyI1OZ
@KenJennings Still shows 93's answer as the final Kennection. Someone's gotta make Ken a better offer than MentalFloss to host this puzzle, 'cause they are blowing it.
@KenJennings@mental_floss Not being able to read all the questions before answering goes against the spirit of the game. Should I be embarrassed at how strongly I feel about this.
@__phantomderp I dealt with this by using CAPS LOCK for everything (mapping it to CMD on Mac and CTRL on Linux). Took a minute to get used to, but easier on my pinkies overall.
@theseantcollins Strong prescription? I noticed this effect with new glasses a few years ago: the lens's chromatic aberration means red light gets focused to a different spot than blue light, and the difference is bigger for more oblique angles (more noticeable when you move your head around)
@replyallguy@ryxcommar nope, this is the "all 4s" code. in the original code, x is a different list object each loop (which you can check with id(x)). here, x is the same list object each time, and we only change the first element (mutating the list without changing its id). try it out, play around!
@ryxcommar It's a good mistake to make (& remember) in front of a class. I was still breaking old MATLAB habits, too. Man I do not miss all those semicolons.
@ryxcommar This got me once while I was teaching (deliberately without numpy):
"We just initialize a 5x5 list of lists with zeros..."
arr = [[0]*5]*5
(arr looks as expected)
"then set arr[0][0] = 1"
(arr does not look as expected)
".... we have all learned a lesson"
@vboykis "Most hash schemes depend on having a "good" hash function ... Python doesn't"
This is the kind of twist that elevates a docstring to literature. The kind to make Knuth proud.
@monteurhulot it's such a great calendar, too bad it was undone by leap years. this part always brings a tear to my eye:
"A fixed arithmetic rule for determining leap years was proposed by Gilbert Romme ... Shortly thereafter, he was sentenced to the guillotine"
