This arrives right on the heels of those lawsuits that handed waived players a fifth year of eligibility for 2026. The courts opened the door; the Big Ten is boarding it up before anyone can step through.
The ACC and SEC are eyeing the same playbook, and the Big 12 is quietly looking over their shoulders too.
Suddenly the Power Four are aligning like they actually planned it. With it, the SEC presidents are expected to lean hard on their athletic directors: take a pro and risk fines, suspensions, or worse.
One insider called it Sankey’s “Sorsby Moment.” You can almost hear the conference offices sharpening the fine print.
The SEC issued a Monday statement that stopped short of an outright ban but left no doubt where it stands. College sports, they insisted, are for college athletes. Once you sign the pro contract and take the paycheck, the line has been crossed.
Blurring it creates competitive chaos and steals opportunities from the kids still in high school or still on campus. Then they did what conferences do best: called on Congress to pass the Protect College Sports Act and sort the whole mess out.
So, the Big Ten isn’t waiting around for Washington. If you went through the draft process or put on an NFL helmet, you’re done in their league. You can always try your luck elsewhere, but the scarlet and gray, the maize and blue, the black and gold—none of them will be available.
Meanwhile, the Louisiana court order that started this circus still stands: sixteen players get to enter the portal, the restitution rule is on ice, and the ghost-transfer nonsense is enjoined. The legal side said yes. The conferences are saying, 'Not in our House.'
