@emlunch A good first aid kit. We bought two MyMedic kits (a mini for travel and a full size one for home) with leftover FSA money two years ago and they're great.
@sedimentamy Seriously?!? That's horrible. And unfortunately, I have a feeling they might end up in the trash, unless they grab the wrong clothes by mistake? Hopefully you get them back!
@erikharold It depends! It used to be SEM-EDS, but now that I have access to a XRD I frequently will go that route. Assuming it is easy to get enough material for XRD...
@EthanRockStory It's such a cool mine tour, and my students loved digging through the collecting area for their own samples! And it'd make for a great episode of Every Rock Has A Story ๐
@MineralCup My vote today is for calcite because it can fluoresce orange under short wave UV light, which was helpful for zinc miners in NJ (willemite, the Zn ore fluoresces green!). I took my mineral resources class to Sterling Hill Zn mine last weekend and it was so cool!!!
@smithcollege has begun the process towards carbon neutrality by 2030 w/ the installation of a campus wide geothermal heating and cooling system. As one of the geologists on campus, I'm extra excited about the drilling and seeing what's beneath us (test well #1 was all arkose).
Okay #geotwitter, decision making time: should I book spontaneous tickets to Iceland or gamble and wait until October (fall break)? Just 2 weeks ago I did tell my husband that the next time #fagradalsfjall erupts we are going, after missing out on seeing #Halemสปaumaสปu....
@CatalieAnneMeow @LJElkins Two surgeries! Oof, that doesn't sound fun. A friend just happened to be in Iceland already (lucky!) and I'm waiting to hear her feedback on how hard the trail actually is.
@CatalieAnneMeow @LJElkins Yup, it seems to be 10 mile round trip (it's further past the 2021 eruption site), and since I want to go at sunset, gotta make that hike back in the dark! But things could change as the eruption changes!
@CatalieAnneMeow @LJElkins The direct flight from Boston is the only way to make this work (cheaper & quicker), and I teach Wed/Fri so a longer labor day weekend is possible. Juggling J's schedule and recovering knee injury hopefully means the 10 mile hike is doable in 3ish weeks. ๐ค for lava then.
@gmichelf I'm considering labor day weekend, hoping that in a month she's still active. That seems safer than waiting until October. Ticket prices for next weekend are a bit too much...
@CosyNomad "affordable" seems relative with an experience like seeing a fissure eruption, lol. I just wish we had a sense of longevity of the eruption.
