Sometimes you need to put a placeholder in an equation. Say you want to answer the question "I bought 12 eggs for $3. How much did I pay per egg?" Well you can start by writing that as:

12*x = $3

"x" is the placeholder for "price per egg." You can't use a number for that placeholder, because you don't know what that number is yet. You could of course write out:

12*(price per egg) = $3

but that gets very wordy. So instead you use a letter. Like "x."

Then you solve the equation:

x = $3/12 = $0.25
