Unfreezing $24B of Iran's own assets doesn't sound so dramatic when you consider a single US company is going public at a valuation 74x that amount
What is a billion dollars anyway?
Money isn't even real anymore
To have a successful career, you need three things:
A coach: Someone with the tools and know-how to help you sharpen what is at play. They are usually certified.
A mentor: A senior person who has walked a similar path to yours.
A sponsor: A senior person who mentions your name in places you cannot access. Sponsors choose you because you are AUTHENTIC AND DEPENDABLE. You will not stain their white because their name carries weigh
Was a regular flyer 2008-2009.
Arik was 15k (Aero used to do 6k but you needed to book long in advance).
One of my tickets below.
Lagos-Ilorin, Dec 2009.
N15k. Return trip, N30k
That was 15% of my 200k salary.
15% of total salary on a single return trip to Ilorin was not something you would "spend and not know"
Companies paying N200k then are paying N1.5m today.
15% of N1.5m = 225k = N112.5k one-way.
Not too far off from the average flight cost today.
It was as convenient/inconvenient for people working in those companies then as it is for those working there today.
If you think N15k flight was an easy decision then, the night buses won't have market then.
Just as people thinking building a house was easy when N200k can build a house. Why didn't everyone build a house then if N200k was that easy to come by?
Or when flight ticket to the UK was N17k in the 1970s (& even visa free for Nigerians then), why didn't many people's parents travel to the UK then if that amount was easy spend relative to their income?
I know things have been getting worse over years, but I see this trend of people using "today's eyes" to look at "old expenses" and declaring those old expenses as easy to spend then.
If na so e easy, why everyone no get house then or fly or travel abroad.
Flying was a luxury in 2009 as it is in 2026. When it was N15k, only few people in good jobs can afford it. Almost just as now.
His test did not show traces of malaria parasite.
This is what likely happened:
-When he filled the form he was flagged immediately under the "lived in endemic area for 6+ months" rule (or another one that indicates he had lived in Nigeria for a while)
-One of the screening test done was a malaria antibody test (MAT)โNot parasite (P-falciparum doesn't live for more than a few weeks to months in our blood, won't be there for 10-12 years).
-After years of repeated childhood exposure to P. falciparum, their antibody levels would very likely still be detectable, the immune system maintains long-term antibody responses to pathogens it has encountered repeatedly. (That's why by virtue of you living in Nigeria you are likely semi-immune).
-A positive MAT = deferral (You have not been "banned" from donating blood, you can still try again in the future to see if you no longer have antibodies and are free to donate).
Every time I see someone talking about potable water, I remember OmoT (my comm med professor) nearly losing it whenever anyone dared to misspell โpotable.โ
I vividly recall playing football in ISL '1993 after playing, we all take turns to wash our legs, face and then drink water from the tap AND not get sick, there was nothing like boreholes or pure water sachets then. Clean Potable Water was supplied by the water works .
Today the people of Lagos island are desperate for water, the very same Lagos Island, Darocha was supplying water through pipes he laid from Iju to Lagos island as far back as 1910.
It is time for a Lagos that works for you, A lagos that revolves around maximising your quality of life, from the most basic things like potable water to the more complex such as affordable housing and affordable intermodal transportation. #ourlagos
โthe most valuable contribution diaspora Nigerians can make is knowledge transfer - not remittancesโ
E.g, with coordination and intentionality; every govt medical facility will have its diaspora alumni in a sort of clinical advisory committee helping with clinical governance etc
Really disturbing to see one of the greatest talents of our time wasting away like this. The thing about addicts is that, even when they are your friends or family, thereโs only so much you can do. You canโt remote-control an adult when you have your own problems to deal with.
The reason Nigeria keeps entering VISA bans here & there is not because of the state of the country, or that weโre poor, itโs because our foreign ministers and ambassadors are not doing their jobs.
Theyโre not creating diplomatic relationships, every other thing is secondary.
