Gerald Barnard "Toby" Balding OBE (1936–2014) was a legendary British racehorse trainer whose career bridged the Flat and National Hunt disciplines, amassing over 2,000 winners across 48 years. Born in New Jersey to an English polo star father and American mother, Balding's early life straddled continents. The family relocated to England in 1945 amid World War II's end, and he honed his equestrian passion at Marlborough College before National Service in the Life Guards. Thrust into training at 19 in 1956 after his father's death from cancer, he inherited the Weyhill stables in Hampshire, becoming Britain's youngest licensed trainer.

Balding's debut victories came swiftly: Bower Chalk on the Flat at Ascot and The Quiet Man over jumps at Wincanton. His versatility shone through successes in sprint handicaps like the Ayr Gold Cup and Stewards' Cup. Yet, National Hunt was his forte, yielding the rare "holy trinity" of British jumps racing: the Grand National, Champion Hurdle, and Cheltenham Gold Cup—one of few trainers to claim all three.

The 1969 Grand National marked his breakthrough, with the veteran Highland Wedding, owned by American interests, triumphing at 100/9 under Eddie Harty Sr. Two decades later, in 1989, 12-year-old Little Polveir stunned at 28/1 with amateur Jim Frost, reviving a faded star through patient schooling. That same year, Balding captured the Champion Hurdle with 50/1 outsider Beech Road. He repeated in 1991 with Morley Street, his finest charge—a versatile gelding who won 20 of 45 starts, including four Aintree Hurdles, two Breeders' Cup Steeplechases, and American Champion Steeplechaser honors in 1990–91. Cool Ground's dramatic 1992 Gold Cup victory, a short-head over The Fellow at 25/1, cemented his mastery of long shots.

Beyond equine triumphs, Balding's legacy endures in nurturing talent. He mentored jockeys like AP McCoy, Adrian Maguire, Richard Dunwoody, and the "Balding Babes," fostering careers with kindness and insight. A founder of the National Trainers' Federation, he served on the British Horseracing Authority board and became an Honorary Jockey Club Member in 2006.

She is such a lovely girl who has been nothing but friendly and happy meeting everyone (including the vet!). She has brilliant whole body wiggles when she’s excited, and she loves to have a little play with soft toys. Lily would like to live as the only pet in her new home with a family who understand bull breeds. She is quite a chunky girl who weighs around 35kg at the moment, so does need an owner who can happily handle a larger breed. Lily is perfect in her kennel – very settled, quiet and spotlessly clean, so appears to be housetrained and happy to be left alone for a few hours. She is such a special girl who desperately needs to find a committed family to give her the life she finally deserves.

Dog Poisoned by the Diffuser
Saturday night I got home late and my dog didn't recognize me. Being a nanny I thought I woke him up and he was having a night terror. Sunday, he was still acting weird. I realized that I had been running my new diffuser and decided to turn it off. Sunday afternoon, he was feeling better.
Today at work, my dog sitter said that he wouldn't come out from under the bed. It was very odd as he is a happy dog.
I came from work early and again, he was very confused about who I was.
So I took him to emergency vet.
It turns out that the tea tree oil I was using in the diffuser is toxic for dogs. Thankfully the test showed that his liver was ok but we weren't out of the woods yet. He was given fluids under his skin to get the toxins out.
The vet and the poison control are saying that they see these cases often now that the popularity of essential oil is growing.
Please make sure that the essential oils you are burning are not toxic for your pets.
