The Institute of Remote Sensing and GIS (IRS) of Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh has partnered with USAID, NASA and ICIMOD’s SERVIR-HKH initiative since 2021, growing into a beacon for regional capacity-building and institution strengthening.
Students at IRS are able to pioneer geospatial research in Bangladesh: with last year’s 10 intake of students securing funding to research water-resource management, crop yield estimates, forest-cover mapping, water-quality monitoring, and large-scale flash flood assessment.
Their work, spanning a spectrum of critical areas, was showcased and applauded at a recent knowledge-sharing workshop that took place earlier this year at IRS.
Rajesh Bahadur Thapa, Senior Remote Sensing and Geoinformation Specialist, and Science and Data Lead of SERVIR-HKH, led the workshop and made a presentation on ‘Earth Observation Applications for Improved Climate Resilience in the Hindu Kush Himalaya’.
Following the workshop, IRS convened an outcome-based education curriculum development meeting. This curriculum, now adopted by Jahangirnagar University, enables faster sharing of technologies, tools, and approaches by regional learning networks.
We wish the fourth batch of students to join IRS under this initiative every success with their important studies.
