Nicolas Sarkozy got a 5-year sentence, and Bolsonaro got 27! If it seems like more and more heads of state are getting locked up, it’s no coincidence. It’s a significant trend!
In this piece, @Anfrancischini examines how religious expression aligned with power is often normalized in Brazil, while faith that challenges inequality is treated as a problem.
Well worth the read!
@delton@OliverStuenkel The list of countries where we propped up autocratic regimes and it later led to counter-insurgencies, populist leaders, etc. is much longer. From your list, South Korea is a great example! We propped up Syngman Rhee until Koreans overthrew him, ending in military dictatorship.

@cesarbaezc@reason Unfortunately, this is why I think cries of “Venezuela Libre” were a bit premature. I’m hoping something happens that will improve life in Venezuela, but given our track record for interventions, I don’t think human rights or democracy are priorities.
@Iberianamerica In the clip, he says when he asks a question, some people just look at him awkwardly and don’t respond. He never claims it’s because he’s white, at least not in what’s shown here.

Chile just had a runoff election between, arguably, the furthest left and the furthest right of the initial candidates. Kast won, indicating a huge pendulum swing from Boric.
Does this mean Chile is polarizing? In my latest article, I argue it’s not:
Chile has just elected a new president, marking a sharp pendulum swing. But is Chile really this polarized?
Our latest article examines how electoral systems can produce polarized outcomes, even when the center is still alive and well.
