Is the rally driven by institutional investors or retail investors? The numbers tell me that both guys are driving the market.
I approached my findings by checking the total transactions in February 2026 done by each stock, arranged from the name that contributes the most to the total market return.
I also checked the total trade count and then computed the average value per trade.
For example, MTNN’s transaction value in Feb 2026 so far is ₦36bn, and the total number of trades so far is 47k, which means the value per trade is ₦780k.
For Seplat, the total transaction value in Feb 2026 so far is ₦21bn, and the total number of trades is 6k, which means the value per trade is ₦3mm.
I worked with Feb 2026 data because that’s when the momentum in the market got really strong.
The average value per trade is a proxy for “participant composition”.
A high average value per trade suggests institutional/HNI dominance. It may also suggest block trades and negotiated deals.
A low average value per trade implies many small trades, and it suggests retail-driven activity.
—————————————————————————
You can also infer liquidity from this data:
✑ A high value traded with low trade count means that liquidity is concentrated (for instance, Presco, Seplat)
✑ A high value traded with a high trade count means that liquidity is broad and deep (for instance, GTCO, MTNN, Zenith Bank).
The sense here is that broad liquidity means it is easy to enter and exit with lower market impact.
Concentrated liquidity means that the price can move sharply once big players step away.
Therefore, the average value per trade helps you distinguish fragile liquidity from resilient liquidity.
—————————————————————————
You can also check for “market conviction versus noise” from this data:
✑ A large average trade size suggests that trades are intentional and conviction-driven. It signals stronger information content.
✑ A small average trade size may suggest more noise and speculative activities.
—————————————————————————
You can also gauge an early signal of accumulation. For example,
✑ If price is flat and average value per trade is rising, it means that there might be quiet accumulation and that big players are building positions lowkey.
✑ If price is rising and average value per trade is falling, it tells you that retail guys are having fun, or they are chasing a move started by smart money
✑ If price is falling and average value per trade is falling, it may suggest that institutional investors are exiting.
—————————————————————————
However, there is a caveat:
✑ The metric does not tell you direction (buy vs sell). You can only infer from the direction of the market
✑ The metric can be distorted by cross deals or one-off block trades. In that case, you may want to adjust for such instances.
—————————————————————————
Based on what I have below, I implemented a cutoff wherein:
✑ >= 2.0% means “strong institutional” (i.e., participation is dominated by institutional investors)
✑ 1.0% - 1.99% means “mixed” (i.e., institutional and retail investors are actively participating)
✑ <1.0% means “retail heavy” (i.e., participation is dominated by retail traders)
—————————————————————————
In my opinion, the retail investors are the ones dominating the NGX, but institutional investors are the ones influencing the recent price rally we are seeing (particularly in Feb. 2026).

The Sultanate received reports of Ramadan crescent sightings from three different locations within Nigeria, and these claims were confirmed by the authorities in the respective areas where the sightings were reported. His Eminence is currently abroad, and an official announcement will soon be made by the Shehu of Borno, who is the deputy president general of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs.
Ramadan mubarak 🌙
There are landlords right now, adding VAT to rent and blaming it on the new tax code.
I had to intervene in a recent case by making the tenants know that RENT for residential apartments is VAT EXEMPT. It is only applicable in commercial properties. I advised the tenants to pay their rent exclusive of VAT and if the landlord insist, they should demand for his TIN/VAT Registration number and collectively write to the NRS to ask for a refund. While their chances of a cash refund is low, writing to the NRS at least notifies the agency of an infraction of the NTA by the landlord.
The next day, the landlord to the tenants to ignore the letter, that the inclusion of VAT on rent was an error. Yeah Right!
It appears to me that in order to protect Nigerians from being exploited by others, many of us will have to assume the role of Community Watch Men and Women of the New Tax Code.
It is an important commentary on the noble hadith of the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) that was recorded in the collection of Sunan Tirmidhi relating the dispute among the chief angels of the Highest Heaven.

A number of people are talking about implications of AI to schools. I spoke about some of my thoughts to a school board earlier, some highlights:
1. You will never be able to detect the use of AI in homework. Full stop. All "detectors" of AI imo don't really work, can be defeated in various ways, and are in principle doomed to fail. You have to assume that any work done outside classroom has used AI.
2. Therefore, the majority of grading has to shift to in-class work (instead of at-home assignments), in settings where teachers can physically monitor students. The students remain motivated to learn how to solve problems without AI because they know they will be evaluated without it in class later.
3. We want students to be able to use AI, it is here to stay and it is extremely powerful, but we also don't want students to be naked in the world without it. Using the calculator as an example of a historically disruptive technology, school teaches you how to do all the basic math & arithmetic so that you can in principle do it by hand, even if calculators are pervasive and greatly speed up work in practical settings. In addition, you understand what it's doing for you, so should it give you a wrong answer (e.g. you mistyped "prompt"), you should be able to notice it, gut check it, verify it in some other way, etc. The verification ability is especially important in the case of AI, which is presently a lot more fallible in a great variety of ways compared to calculators.
4. A lot of the evaluation settings remain at teacher's discretion and involve a creative design space of no tools, cheatsheets, open book, provided AI responses, direct internet/AI access, etc.
TLDR the goal is that the students are proficient in the use of AI, but can also exist without it, and imo the only way to get there is to flip classes around and move the majority of testing to in class settings.
I researched Ajaokuta extensively, and what struck me was that its failure was not primarily due to corruption. Instead, Nigeria's lack of proper project management during the late 1970s and early 1980s played a significant role.
The USSR misled Nigeria into awarding the contract. Although Nigeria was inclined to give the contract to Western companies, the USSR claimed they had discovered ore suitable for steel production in Nigeria, which turned out to be untrue.
At one point, the USSR had around 20,000 workers, along with their families, in Nigeria, highlighting the project's scale and its importance to the Soviet economy.
Following Ajaokuta, Nigeria did not award any major contracts to the Soviets again. Even within Ajaokuta itself, Nigeria invited Western firms to construct some components of the project.
All the other steel plants built in Nigeria, including those in Delta, Jos, Oshogbo, and Katsina, were constructed by Western companies.
Ajaokuta's failure is not solely a Nigerian issue; it is an African failure. If the project had succeeded, many African nations would have followed suit by building smaller steel plants, leading to greater industrialization across the continent.
It's a sad story; no one should overlook the lessons learned from it play politics with or blame anyone.
We tried and failed
The other day, I saw a post asking what Nigerians who made at least N1m were doing.
N1m is just $662.
It is not that a big deal if you open your eyes to the truth which is something most people don't do.
And that is - Nigerian jobs that will comfortably pay you N1m a month are scarce.
If you don't believe me, go around and ask how much money doctors, bankers and professors get paid.
It leaves you with 2 options:
Option 1 is - Find remote jobs:
It is easier for foreign companies to pay you $1000 a month or more. Don't ask me how to get the remote jobs sha. There are people out there who teach these things.
Option 2 is - Start a business:
It maybe online or offline. Online is easier IF you will learn how it works and not be a lazy ass.
With a business, you can control your own income.
I have been sharing various online income models for years.
Some people who listened have made millions.
If you see a young guy or girl in your social media feed driving a Benz and living the soft life, they are the ones who listened.
And my advice has been simple:
If you are a young Nigerian who wants to actually make good money online, choose one of the 7 income models below and focus on it for at least 6 months.
1. Affiliate marketing - You sell other people's offers for a commission.
2. Information marketing - You package and sell your knowledge
3. Smart Ecommerce - You buy or produce physical products and promote with the internet.
4. Ghostwriting - You help people or companies write social media posts, articles, stories or books.
5. Skills freelancing - You sell your skills to people or companies who need them - E.g Copywriting, video editing, graphic design etc
6. Run a Youtube Faceless Channel - You post faceless videos on Youtube, Youtube runs ads on the videos, you get a commission.
7. Start a Micro advertising agency - You help businesses run ads on Youtube, Meta etc and you get paid 15% or whatever your rate is.
Again, pick one, stick with it and master it.
That is the key.
For context, these were my earlier expectations. I had projected some ₦200bn ish profits, but they will most likely go above that.
The share price has done +38% since this day, but given recent growth numbers, the stock should reprice again.... working with a ₦160 FV.

HONOUR, COURAGE AND SACRIFICE:
THE STORY OF LATE LT COL M ABU ALI. 1
I received a message today that brought back memories of my conversation with Late Col Abu-Ali. We were preparing to recapture Malam-Fatori after successfully retaking Kangarwa. During lunch, I would often set aside food and water for the birds and lizards, as the harsh weather made it difficult for them to survive. Reason why from kangarwa to hell fire is just 20 naira. We sat down discussing with him when he shared a profound message with us,
Getting stung by a scorpion is very frightening, and over the years in my practice of medicine, I’ve seen many react with fear, pain, and anxiety. I’ve even seen grown men shed tears because of the pain. Someone described it as having a hammer hit their finger constantly.
The first concern people have is often whether the sting is poisonous. There are more than 2,500 scorpion species, but only about 30 are considered dangerous to humans, which is less than 1%. So, while most stings don’t require a hospital visit, knowing what to do can make a difference.
Scorpions are highly adaptable creatures that exist in diverse habitats around the globe, from arid deserts to forests and grasslands. There are different species and I’ll highlight them in this post. But the most venomous species are concentrated mainly in the family Buthidae.

If I could go back & give my 20 year old self the knowledge that would prevent him from living almost an entire decade with chronic back pain,
This would be it...
