It's misty in upstate New York this morning. So naturally I'm thinking about the Owl's Nest Cafe at Kresge College on the UCSC campus, and am reminded of the giant muffins they served (which were actually just upside down mini bundt cakes). A nice memory of a good writing spot.😊
What makes some people better at trivia than others?
in one of the most insane multi-year "research is mesearch" journeys ever, we (me + @_laurenwilkins_ + @mariam_s_aly ) ran a study to answer this very question! https://t.co/znIqZyXbby check it out!! 1/ 🧵
My work sits at the intersection between two domains that don't often interact, so I have lots of desk rejections due to lack of fit.
I'm writing about this issue in my tenure dossier this morning, which is when I received my most recent desk rejection due to lack of fit.😂
Just hired a 21yo for their first job. What basic professional advice do they need? Here's what I tell all my new staff, but perhaps you can add. I'll start small.
1/ Use an online calendar. Have a foolproof system of reminders, so you never forget a deadline or obligation.

A cool idea from improv training - the failure bow. Could be cool to incorporate into research training, or even public settings like conference or colloquium talks (e.g., start or end every talk with a failure bow). I’ll share one of mine in next tweet

Y'all, I wish every single one of you had the grad advisor that I did. I'm 5+ years post-PhD, & he's still the most delightful collaborator/supporter.
(Also...whether you can or can't have one of these people in your life... you can always BE one of these people. Right? Right.)
Successful replication of 'Lost in the Mall' study (Loftus & Pickrell, 1995). With n = 123, the proportion of participants who reported false memories for fabricated events was even higher than in the original study: 35% vs. 25%

Today is the 40th anniversary of Sally Ride’s first flight into space! She and the rest of the women selected in that first class of female astronauts changed my dream of becoming an astronaut into a goal. Thank you all for the inspiration.
Non-promotable work: One study found that women were 2.7x more likely than men to volunteer to serve on a committee. Leaders should compensate women for such non-promotable work, ensure women are not overloaded & make sure the work is evenly distributed.

My hot take is that Ch*tGPT is free right now because it needs you to feed it your stories, essays, and poems for free, and when it’s done taking all you have, they’ll put it all behind a paywall.
