What if learning isn’t supposed to be accelerated? I’m not anti-AI, but I’m very concerned.
The core problem is that the hype of AI is about gains in productivity. Productivity and learning are not the same thing.
We’ve never addressed labor of response to writing. It’s quite possibly the most labor intensive part of teaching. It’s an impossible challenge given loads people must teach.
(and I say “we” as a tenured faculty who wrote a diss partially on the material conditions of response)
Students: "I'm unable to access your article, I don't suppose you could email me a pdf? No worries if..."
Academics: "OH GOD YES! I've already sent it. Share it with family, friends, and strangers. PLEASE READ IT"
Students are driven to AI because they believe their writing is broken and AI will fix it. We need to do more to help students discover the joy of imperfect writing—it’s humanity, its role in the learning process, and the hilarity of the dumb mistakes we all make.
irony is dead and all but it’s pretty depressing to see Ghibli A.I. slop on the timeline not only because Miyazaki famously thinks A.I. art is disgusting but because he’s spent the last 50 years making art about environmental waste for petty human uses
if you’re truly hating correctly you will take the requisite time to learn everything about the subject you are hating on, just to hate better. to hate deeper. to hate more efficiently and effectively.

These are called “bribes.”
The President of the United States is openly accepting million dollar bribes and we’re so used to his corruption that it doesn’t even crack the news cycle.
This is what an oligarchy looks like.
