The fatwa against Rishi Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay’s ‘Vande Mataram’ is not without history and can be traced to Congress’s capitulation in the face of Islamist opposition.
In 1923, the Congress met at Kakinada and Maulana Mohamed Ali was brought to the venue in a procession led by a raucous band. As was the practice, the session was scheduled to begin with a rendition of ‘Vande Mataram’ by Pandit Vishnu Digamabar Paluskar.
When Pandit Paluskar rose to sing what had by then become the anthem of India's freedom movement, Maulana Mohamed Ali protested, saying that music was taboo to Islam and therefore singing ‘Vande Mataram’ would hurt his religious sensitiveness.
Pandit Paulskar snubbed the maulana, pointing out that the Congress session was an open gathering and not a religion congregation of any one faith. For good measure, he added that since the Maulana had not found the band that led his procession as taboo to Islam, he could not object to the singing of ‘Vande Mataram’.
Maulana Mohammed Ali may have been stumped on that occasion, but by the time India became independent from foreign rule, the Congress had conceded ground to those who today exercise their veto against the singing of India’s National Song, ‘Vande Mataram’.
By 1937, Vande Mataram had become a 'Muslim grievance' and Ali Sardar Jafri convinced fellow-traveller Jawaharlal Nehru that the song which had inspired the freedom movement and sent martyrs like Khudiram Bose to the gallows without any trace of regret, was actually 'idolatorous in spirit'.
In fact, Nehru went a step further and described the mantra of Indian nationalism and patriotism as 'out of keeping with modern notions of nationalism and progress.'
The Muslim League was quick to take its cue from Nehru and a month later, on October 17, 1937, passed a resolution at its Lucknow session, condemning the Congress for foisting ‘Vande Mataram’ as the national anthem upon the country in ‘callous disregard of the feelings of Muslims.'
When the Congress Working Committee met in Calcutta later that year with Nehru as Congress president, it officially recognised 'the validity of the objections raised by the Muslims to certain parts of the Vande Mataram song' and 'recommended that at national gatherings the first two stanzas only of the song should be sung.'
The cultural and civilisational content of ‘Vande Mataram’ was sacrificed by the Congress on the altar of Muslim League politics.
But appeasement does not have any limits -- the Muslim League was not reassured either by Nehru's action or his promise that ‘Vande Mataram’ in 'future (will) become less important.'
The Pirpur Committee, which was set up by the Muslim League to compile a list of 'atrocities against Muslims', submitted its report on November 15, 1938. Among the 'atrocities against Muslims' was listed ‘Vande Mataram’.
Given this history, there is no reason to be surprised by Sonia Gandhi exercising the veto against the singing of Bharat’s National Song — the full version of ‘Vande Mataram’ — on behalf of the descendants and adherents of the Pirpuris.

Sumitro Chatterjee, descendent of Rishi Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay who composed ‘Vande Mataram’, gives a history lesson to Sonia Gandhi. In Hindi.
If Sonia Gandhi were to get the letter translated, she would have realised the hurt she has inflicted on those who hold Bharatvarsha as a sacred land and for whom the soul of this great nation and ancient civilisation resides in its sacred symbols — the National Flag, the National Anthem, the National Song.
India was, is, and shall remain the sovereign land of Sri Ram; it will never ever be a vassal of Rome.
Vande Mataram!
Jharkhand Students Agitation leader Devendra Mahto in a serious condition on 15th day of hunger strike! Remember a fraud scientist/activist secretly ate stuff backstage & remained fit! Meanwhile, CJP cockroaches are enjoying activist tourism to BJP states!

@WBPolice@BJP4Bengal Kindly look into this matter and arrest these Chapries asap and give them with some belt treatment https://t.co/3gbqTVq983
They have absolutely nothing to do with students. They showed up at the CJP protest purely for some clout and a few extra followers. Unfortunately, you won’t find them in Jharkhand, where students are actually protesting without any media attention https://t.co/YrwLnyuRQJ
Abhijeet Dickpe flew all the way from the US for CJP protest. Saurav, Dahiya & Ranka joined d from different places.
But they won't travel from Delhi to Jharkhand.
Funding matters!!
Enough of long rope.
Government must come into action
It looks cowardice now
Though there is no alternative but we are disgusted with non action of @narendramodi ji government
Fact 1: Home Ministry cancelled #FCRA registration of @Wangchuk66’s NGO, #SEMCOL, in September 2025 following a CBI inquiry that found financial irregularities & foreign exchange violations in the NGO.
Fact 2: @abhijeet_dipke was an #AAP social media volunteer in 2020-23 & helped the AAP team create a digital campaign for the Delhi election.
Fact 3: Govt must fix accountability for the NEET paper leaks. But it must not give into street thuggery & political blackmail.
Who disagrees that dhulmul niti on CJP protest is raising our eyebrows ?
We urge HM Shri @AmitShah ji to use strong arm methods to quell miscreants. Your supporters will stand with you
