The most important study I've done in my career (25 yrs ago) revealed that freshwater animals were disappearing 5X faster than land animals in N. America -a loss rate similar to tropical rainforests. I was naive enough to think this finding would change the focus of conservation.
They captured visual evidence of a critically endangered bird not seen alive since the 19th century. The genuine passion & joy they feel from this discovery is exactly why many of us become scientists.
