There was no vision shared with us. No 5 year plan like at Tesla. Nothing more than what anyone can see on Twitter. It allegedly is coming for those who stayed but the ask was blind faith and required signing away the severance offer before seeing it. Pure loyalty test.
@jasonbuhle But my experience was idiosyncratic and there's an enormous range of possible experiences w/in academic. It does feel like a net loss to our collective knowledge that academic careers turn out being untenable for so many who'd have preferred to stay.
@jasonbuhle Not me personally. The culture of academia wasn't a good fit for me - poor work/life balance, the style of writing never feeling genuine to my authorial voice, all manner of dysfunction within depts and labs and advising relationships, etc.
@dscout@Meta Great discussion, and the panelists all seem brilliant and well-intentioned. But tbh given fb/Meta's track record overall, I can't help but feel a bit queasy at the prospect of private virtual spaces becoming a new frontier for extractive research & data collection

Burnout isn’t always about having too much work.
Burnout is often a result of doing too little of what you like in an environment that doesn’t support you.
Long weekends help but don’t fix burnout.
Deeply thinking through changes to the environment surrounding the work does.
