Back to my "The future is interface, not software." statement. As AI capabilities converge, how we interact with AI becomes the key differentiator. The next big leap won't be in algorithms, but in intuitive AI interfaces that blur the line between human and machine.
@JustAnotherPM Probably trying to drive repeat purchases. It’s possible they ran a/b tests showing this before and after purchase, looking at impact to conversion and repeat metrics (time to repeat, frequency and value). I agree it’s an odd placement, but hopefully they had data to back it up!
The North Star Metric is an extremely simple, powerful concept.
But it's largely misunderstood.
In this post:
1. What is a North Star Metric?
2. Common Misconceptions
3. Recommended Classification
Let's tackle them one by one:
🧵
This is a *perfect* example of something that happens in tech all the time…it’s not just Google but most visibly happening at Google and we are seeing it play out realtime. Google has amazing tech, it’s not the tech obviously
Clear lack of vision and decisive leadership
This results in no decision making, no direction setting, and pure maintenance mode glide path “work”. Entropy at its finest
Easiest way to get a company who is experiencing this back on top?
A small set of singularly area accountable people owning outcomes who say “no” to most things and “yes” only to a small handful of highly important things
Most people can neither handle this pure leadership burden nor do the org change management to make this happen

Loved those 8 product principles from TRANSFORMED: Moving to the Product Operating Model by Marty Cagan:
I. PRODUCT TEAM PRINCIPLES
Principle 1: Empowered with Problems to Solve
In his previous book, EMPOWERED, Marty defined an empowered product team as “given a problem to solve, rather than solutions to build, and, most importantly, are held accountable for the results.”
In TRANSFORMED (Chapter 8), he further defines two types of problems the team can be empowered with: customer problems and company problems, and explains that they are accompanied by desired outcomes to achieve.
🧵
Twitch Cofounder Emmett Shear: "If you haven’t talked to users… you don’t get to have an opinion about the product.”
“You talk to your users first, and then you have ideas about your product. Almost everyone does it in the opposite order. If you find yourself thinking: ‘I’m going to go talk to my users to validate my product idea’, you’ve gone horribly off the rails…If you haven’t talked to users and you haven’t looked at data, you don’t get to have an opinion about the product. The person who has actually done the work gets to have the opinion. You can have ideas, but they get to make the call.”
Every LLM has a personality
GPT-4 is like a lazy reticent teenager refusing to answer questions, requiring a lot of pushing to write code and do things
Claude 3 is like an eager and thoughtful adult with a bias for action
Gemini is a holier-than-thou wokist that strives too hard to be politically correct
Grok is the irreverent and slightly dumb teenager, made fun of by its intellectual counter parts
The end game will be multiple LLMs each with their own personality! 😃
Rippling is pushing this concept of a 'compound startup' which is a company with a multi-product portfolio rather than a point solution where also unified data can reduce complexity and cost for customers.
Product Discovery activities by risk.
This isn't supposed to be an 'ultimate list' or 'must do'
I created it as a guide to help give you an idea of some of the discovery activities that you might do depending on what you need to test - you still need to work out what to test!
It is so wild to me that when I was in school we spent 3 years doing calculus, and spent no time at all on financial literacy, health/nutrition, psychology - the things that are far more likely to make or break your life than not knowing how to do fancy math by hand.
@brookeleblanc Hi Brooke 👋. This is a great idea! I just created a Women in Fintech slack channel. Would be great to have fellow fintech ladies to connect with. Wanna join? Let's build this! DM to coordinate. #womeninfintech
Good article on how to teach girls that competition is good, as well as how to balance being competitive with nice. #WomenInSTEM#competition https://t.co/QZkWgQ0Nkk
Congratulations to Katie Bouman to whom we owe the first photograph of a black hole ever. Not seeing her name circulate nearly enough in the press.
Amazing work. And here’s to more women in science (getting their credit and being remembered in history) 💥🔥☄️
Baby boomers are leaving the workforce in big numbers, and retirement security in America is extremely shaky.
An alarming 29% of households aged 55 and older have no retirement savings and no pension https://t.co/KGvKUdmHk4
By 2030, more than 21 million retirees will have to rely on Social Security, which amounts to roughly $17,500/year.
💰 That's barely above the federal poverty level of $12,490 https://t.co/KGvKUdmHk4
