@JustinTrudeau Long-term investments are very different from salary. Pretending they’re the same is pandering.
Investments in Canada are what pay for the salaries and growth we need. Time to listen to Bill Morneau - he really understands national level finance. This is the tax change to axe.
Justin, I appreciate your sense for 'fairness', but let's not forget that a big part of capital gains is not real income, it's inflation.
In fact, with high inflation and low rates of returns, it's possible to be taxed on a loss as though it were income.
Let's take an example to make this more concrete.
Total CPI peaked in June 2022 at 8.1%. Let's assume an investor sold a stock that earned a 4 % return in nominal terms, but during the time of that return, inflation was high, like in June 2022.
In real terms, that investor has lost money, but is going to be taxed as though he made money, since taxation is in nominal dollars, it is not inflation adjusted.
A similar situation would apply if e.g. someone sold a cottage that appreciated. A large part of that increase will be no more than inflation.
Is it fair to tax people on inflation, particularly when inflation is being spurred on by government spending?
Let me get this straight:
SVB's Chief Administrative Officer was the CFO of Lehman Brothers' Investment Bank when it collapsed.
SVB's Chief Risk Officer was the Managing Director at Deutsche Bank during 2008 AND led credit ratings in 2007.
The CEO was a director at the San Francisco Fed from 2019 to the present.
You can't make this shit up ....
Hilarious. The Chief Administrative Officer at #SVB used to be the CFO of Lehman Brothers' Global Investment Bank when it collapsed. 🙈

@kevinharding@mec I’m deeply concerned that the board has not met their duty to the company in this move. I’m in to help get this train back on the right track. Hope others are too even if only by donation.
@kevinharding@mec The board needs to try harder. This was not in the spirit of a coop. Thanks for the link. https://t.co/faRXpXpMgn is good for all members to review.
