One of my biggest pet peeves as a STEM educator is the number of people that seem to believe it is physiologically impossible to have an aptitude for STEM while simultaneously possessing the ability to communicate effectively through writing and presentations
It’s a basic skill people!
You want anyone to care about your ideas? Learn about the work you do? Pay attention to what you’re trying to say? Make an impact? You need to be able to write and communicate clearly. This includes everything from journal papers to emails to elevator pitches.
I’m not asking for Shakespeare. Just clear writing, clean grammar, free of typos. That’s basic high school stuff. With current digital aids available there’s simply no excuse not to pass this low bar.
Plus, I’m talking about students applying for PHD RESEARCH POSITIONS IN ROCKET SCIENCE. I’m looking for the best of the best. And I find them. Got a lab full of them. These people exist and they’re great. My standards will remain high.
