@epyllia @JamelOstwald @adlangmead Agreed. Being able to handle files changes everything. I'd also cover string parsing, file encodings (something a CS-focused "basic" Python course would probably ignore, but something DH people run into). Plus, installing libraries and virtual environments.
.@tla#DH2019 raises some provocative questions: good markup == markup that *means something*. meaning => function. functionality => process, logic, and code! Transcription = nterpretation Software dev ALSO form of interpretation! Can interpretation be automated via software dev?
@sp_meta @mia_out The big Q. It's a paradigm shift from 'keep what makes us special' to 'share what makes us special' & it's difficult to make that massive shift. institutional heads need to trust us, build time into our schedules for collabs & encourage staff in concrete ways to engage. #DH2019
@jamescummings@jotis13@chnm Oh, absolutely. Those are interesting problems. But then there are those moments when you've removed that 99th Gutenberg header or had to fix the 100th CSV file's encoding. Aren't those boring? #dh2019
Point made by GMU team: a lot of labor is done for free, or by undergraduates. Little institutional commitment to long-term support. Reliance on unpaid or cheap labor. #dh2019
@jamescummings@jotis13@chnm LOL. To clarify: my job involves both DH and non-DH stuff (administrative apps). The latter is more likely to go to undergrads. #dh2019
I love it when DH'ers use the phrase "traditional machine learning" to distinguish things like #SVM from more recent neural network / deep learning approaches. #DH2019
Near-zero hard funding, Unsustainable "free labor", Continuous loss of institutional knowledge, Unfounded mandates for infinite lifetimes <-- Maintaining digital humanities project websites in the long run #DH2019 Faolan Cheslack-Postava
This is a good point: how many times have you heard at your institution "can we hire a student dev to do that"? Not blaming the managers who cut costs, but institutions that don't account for real needs and fund it adequately. #dh2019
