Retro Rain, Neon Maps
It’s all of a piece, I thought:
a singular, recurring harmony.
This falling rain, this ancient fear.

For a moment, everything was clear:
neon maps beneath the storm,
a Beatles song in the rain.

The world was barely there.
Don’t we all secretly feel this?

The old violence wears new clothes.
It moves through the world.

For one suspended moment, it seems possible
to understand the pattern.
Then the pattern disappears.

Caravaggio’s Saint Catherine of Alexandria (1598) might be Rome’s most scandalous portrait.

The model was Fillide Melandroni, a famous Roman courtesan. Caravaggio painted her while she was repeatedly arrested for street brawls. He put her face on a holy martyr. And he knew people would recognise her.

Cardinal Francesco Maria del Monte bought it for his private rooms. The church hierarchy entertained guests under the portrait of a known prostitute.
