Can remote sensing and #MachineLearning help improve weather forecasting in Africa?
At Research@ Accra in Ghana, Google researcher Santiago Hincapie Potes spoke about the challenge of weather forecasting in Africa, and how #ML can be leveraged to achieve more accurate results.
@xwang_lk Two main reasons (IMO):
1) TPUs are design to fit Google needs, externalizing them might affect the teams priorities in order to fit the needs of the market.
2) Scaling the distribution chain is far from trivial, it potentially requieres a *huge* investment
The decline of Chatbot Arena: Mostly, it’s just Goodhart's law one more time: “When a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure".
But even more so if there is a lot of money riding on it.

Great to see AI-based weather prediction being rolled out across Africa. This is important because traditional weather forecasts rely much more on ground-based radar, and in Africa, there simply aren't enough to give high quality traditional forecasts.

@BlackHC Ugh, this is so incredibly disappointing to hear. This kind of stuff just shouldn't happen, especially at a place claiming to be pushing the boundaries of ethical AI. Major props to you for having the courage to speak out. We need more people willing to stand up.

imagine if we had a fraction of the current outrage around Google's Gemini "going woke" over the past years when generative AI consistently produced racist stereotypes (which most generative AI still does)
@jason_kint I got one to reproduce... The model must have seen that article more than once and overfit to it. The prompt is too short otherwise. But I also needed a system prompt that tells GPT-4 that it is the New York Times
