I find it incredibly easy to believe. Pratt basically performed at his poll numbers, in a city that is bluer than the county and in a county that is bluer than a very blue state. Bass is establishment Dem (not by her resume but by virtue of her incumbency) at a time of surging leftwing populism. The idea that either of the Democrat candidates wouldn’t have preferred to run against Pratt is preposterous. So the conspiracy to tank Pratt would have to be against the wishes of both candidates who benefitted from this conspiracy. Also, the forces that tanked Pratt were fine with letting the Trump backed Republican gubernatorial candidate make it to the general? Really? Also the demographics of Raman voters are perfectly consonant with the habits of young voters. Last, California’s incompetence at counting votes has yielded GOP wins in the past. Assuming that the same delays now “prove” anything other than consistently lethargic counting is a giant logical error.
Meanwhile, the fact that a lot of low information people think it was obviously stolen means nothing to me in terms of how to think about the facts, but you’re right that it matters politically and culturally. That people who should know better are letting their motivated reasoning get the better of them and are stoking this belief matters more.
@conorsen@opinion Something big missing from this essay. Chat with a south bay realtor or look at listings. The top is still hot. A tidy 4/2 1950’s home in a “good” school district still sells quickly ($3 mil) BUT condo prices are falling. Visa holders in tech are afraid to commit to buying.
@conorsen Yeah, I had friends a little older than me who started startups in the 90’s that petered out after years of grinding and then they were too old (fifties or even forties) to get good programmer jobs. If you also mortgaged your home to fund the startup it was even worse.
@CoachDanGo I'm suspicious. Why not check results for kids at any school who had first period PE vs other periods of the day and see what the results were? Is this replicable? Or did Naperville change anything else in what they were doing?
@FreeRangeKids Some of us remember what it was really like to be a free-range kid in the 80's. Jr highers smoked and drank. Many were sexually active (and their parents had no idea). Men exposing themselves to kids in parks or near schools was common. Did it make me a nervous parent? Yes!
@pastordmack I can't help noticing that the same men most opposed to women in any kind of spiritual or moral leadership lead the same institution that chose not to protect women and girls from sexual abuse by pastors. They don't love the Bible, they love denigrating women. It's ungodly.
@XotesSol@timurkuran (Clarifying - NOT on the SAT, that was pre-covid, only now in some college classes. But more time does really help some kids who are plenty bright but have a disabling condition.)
@XotesSol@timurkuran My kid just got approved for extra time. He has brain fog from long covid (was a national merit finalist previously) and when tired his thinking slows down. He understands the Calculus fine, he just can't work quickly anymore. He did not enjoy having to make that request.
@timurkuran So, my kid gets extra time on college exams (not the SAT, that was fine - he was a National Merit Finalist). He has long covid, and in a two hour exam, he has trouble concentrating after the first hour. Which is better than 2 years ago when it was 15 min. Have compassion.
