A 13th-century stone inscription from Tamil Nadu proves that the Chola Empire was doing all three—with ruthless efficiency.

Let’s travel back to 1225 CE, during the reign of Chola King Rajaraja III.

At the ancient Satchinathar Temple in Thiruppurambiyam, a massive financial scandal was quietly brewing. The temple's financial system was incredibly sophisticated.

They didn't just lump all their wealth into one treasury; they had highly compartmentalized funds with separate accountants for the main deity, the Goddess (Kamakkottam Nachiyar), and the attendant gods (ashta-parivara devas).

Managing this vast wealth were the Kanakku-kāniyudaiyargal; elite, hereditary temple accountants who held their prestigious jobs by birthright.

Believing they were close to royalty and above the law, they began skimming money off the top, systematically diverting sacred temple funds to pad their own pockets.

But the Chola bureaucratic machine was legendary for a reason. They didn't just blindly trust local authorities to keep honest books. The state ordered a rigorous "companion audit" to investigate the temple's finances.

External auditors painstakingly went through the localized ledgers, matched the accounts, and caught the hereditary accountants red-handed.

The total missing? A staggering 40,000 kāsu (Chola currency).

So, how did medieval Chola justice deal with corrupt white-collar workers?

They didn't just throw them in a dungeon or issue a simple fine. They wanted the state's money back. To do this, the authorities executed a brilliantly ruthless legal mechanism known as the Chandesvara Peruvilai (Sale in the name of Chandesvara).

In Saiva tradition, Lord Chandesvara is the strict, divine manager and chief steward of Shiva's property. Any legal transaction involving temple land,buying, selling, or leasing—was strictly executed in his name.

Using this law, the temple committee essentially executed a divine foreclosure. They legally seized the private, ancestral lands of the corrupt accountants, completely stripped them of their assets, and publicly auctioned the real estate off in the name of Lord Chandesvara.

The result? The stolen 40,000 kāsu was fully restituted back to the temple treasury. The state was made completely whole.

This brilliant piece of epigraphy shows us exactly how advanced ancient India's jurisprudence was.

The justice system prioritized strict financial restitution over mere punitive violence. The message was clear: if you steal from the gods, the state will make sure the gods take your house!
