Those who complain that I critique media for problems like fake objectivity that only serves the status quo—and helps shield obvious lies—may or may not be surprised that I was part of a @columbiajourn masters program started by Dr. James Carey, who is discussed here.
In my writing workshops, I discuss 3 types of info-gathering for non-fiction. Which do I believe is the holy grail of reporting? (Don’t give it up if former student!)
A first draft is just the writer telling the story to him- or herself; the later drafts are about telling the important parts of that story to someone else. https://t.co/pByqUKacIC
Writing is not and should not be competitive. Do not compare yourself to anybody. Own your voice. Tell a story you'd want to read. Lie until you believe it. Jump outside your own skin and inside someone else's heart. Write without stopping. Edit later. Good luck.
Remember, writing is hard, but we don't have to glorify busy to prove that.
While it certainly comes with its own unique challenges, & many have to write AND work day jobs, writing isn't coal mining. It isn't the night shift on the line. It isn't being deployed far from family.
