#Analysis: Pro-Union Somaliland origin ministers absent as Somali PM heads to LasAnod.
A fresh wave of controversy has emerged over the role and political stance of ministers, parliamentarians, and other politicians originally from Somaliland who serve within the Federal Government of Somalia. These politicians have long voiced opposition to the secessionist project led by the Somaliland administration, insisting they stand firmly for a united Somalia. However, their absence from the high-profile federal delegation heading to Lasanod has raised eyebrows and triggered a broader debate on their true political alignment.
LasAnod, a key city in the northern regions, remains the only area in the north where the Somalia national flag flies and the Federal Government of Somalia maintains a presence. Yet, as Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre prepares for a historic visit to the city, the first ever by a sitting Somali prime minister, none of the vocal unionist politicians from Somaliland in Mogadishu have not been seen among the delegates who have already arrived in LasAnod, and there is no indication that they will be part of the delegation accompanying the Prime Minister on tomorrow’s flight.
The prime minister is expected to meet with SSC-Khaatumo leaders to discuss a prisoner swap as a goodwill gesture, which is hoped to pave the way for broader dialogue. In return, SSC-Khaatumo is seeking official recognition as a Federal Member State (FMS), with full access to development and humanitarian projects. Such a move would end the longstanding designation of the region as a “disputed territory” and remove the informal barriers that have hindered direct engagement by development and aid organizations.
This visit marks a historic turning point and could redefine Somalia’s political landscape in the north. Yet, the absence of Somaliland-origin leaders from the delegation raises a pressing question: Do these politicians truly oppose Somaliland’s secession, or is their unionist stance a political facade?
Many Somalis expected these leaders to be part of this landmark occasion, a chance for them to set foot in a northern region openly aligned with the union, and to reaffirm their stated commitment to a unified Somalia. As Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre arrives in Lasanod, public attention is sharply focused on the actions or inactions of Somaliland politicians in Mogadishu. Their participation, or lack thereof, will be seen as a critical indicator of where they truly stand in Somalia’s ongoing national unity debate & journey.
Former Somalia intel chief, and a member of the military junta behind the 1969 coup, Ahmed Suleyman Abdalla (Dafle) has passed away on Thursday, reports.
Dafle was son-in-law of former military ruler, Mohamed Siyaad Barre and also one of the five-member politburo which made governance decision in Somalia for over two decades.
Somalia’s current government officials sent condolences for the death of Dafle, who is believed to have been nearly 90 years old at the time of passing.
Ethiopia’s Military Preparations – Abiy Ahmed is Following Putin’s Strategy Against Somalia
The recent statement by General Birhanu Jula that Ethiopia is preparing for a “foreign invasion” is a dangerous tactic we have seen before—Abiy Ahmed seems to have learned from Putin. First, a false external threat is created, then military aggression against a weaker neighbor follows—just as Russia did with Ukraine.
•A Pretext for Expansion
Russia justified its invasion of Ukraine with “security concerns” and alleged external threats. Now Ethiopia is using the same strategy—manufacturing an enemy as an excuse for potential military actions against Somalia.
•An Attack on Somalia’s Sovereignty
Ethiopia is seeking to expand its military and political power to force access to the sea. Abiy Ahmed has already declared that he is ready to use “all means” to achieve this goal—a direct threat to Somalia.
•Geopolitical Blackmail Through Military Presence
Ethiopian troops are already stationed in Somalia. Just like Russia in eastern Ukraine, Ethiopia could now attempt to expand its presence, fuel internal conflicts, and later position itself as a “protector”—a classic move by expansionist powers.
I see a direct threat to Somalia that cannot be ignored. The world has witnessed what happened in Ukraine—we must not allow Ethiopia to do the same to Somalia! Our coast belongs to us, and we must defend it at all costs.
