Ok there are some sharp edges I need to smooth - I did have to break out of an infinite loop

(every time AFTER I commit it would say something like "ok just committed to gait" and then try to commit that commit)

(I *love* pushing systems into infinite loops by the way I could have set my house on fire if I walked away for long enough)

All this to say it works! It works!
