THE QURAN’S OPPRESSION OF WOMEN: MALE DOMINANCE IN MARRIAGE, HALF-VALUE TESTIMONY, AND PARADISE FRAMED FOR MEN THAT REJECTS BIBLICAL DIGNITY

The Quran grants women spiritual accountability and the possibility of reward in the afterlife, yet it locks them into a permanent structure of male authority and legal inferiority in this life.

This is not a minor cultural detail. It is the direct teaching of the text that shapes Sharia law and daily life across Islamic societies.

SPIRITUAL RECOGNITION WITHOUT EQUALITY

Surah 4:124, Surah 16:97, and Surah 40:40 acknowledge that believing women, like men, can do righteous deeds and enter Paradise. That much is granted.

However, Surah 2:228 immediately undercuts any notion of equal standing by declaring that women have rights similar to those against them, “but men have a degree above them.” The Quran itself fixes male superiority as a settled fact in the marriage relationship.

PARADISE DESIGNED AROUND MALE DESIRE

The Quran’s descriptions of Paradise repeatedly center male pleasure. Surah 52:20, Surah 44:54, Surah 56:22-24, and Surah 78:32-33 portray gardens, couches, and wide-eyed companions (houris) created for the enjoyment of righteous men.

The imagery is overwhelmingly sensual and male-focused. Women are present in the reward, but the vision of eternity is not developed around female dignity, fellowship with Jehovah, or holiness.

By contrast, the Bible presents eternal life as resurrection under Christ’s rule, freedom from sin, and restored relationship with Jehovah. Jesus never lured followers with promises of endless sexual availability. He called them to purity and promised holiness in the age to come.

MARRIAGE AS MALE CONTROL AND SEXUAL ENTITLEMENT

Surah 2:223 tells men that their wives are like tilth and instructs them to approach their tilth “as they will.” This reduces the wife to a field for the husband’s use.

Surah 4:34 declares men to be maintainers over women because Allah has preferred some over others and because men spend from their wealth. It then gives husbands a three-step process for dealing with feared rebellion: admonish them, refuse to share their beds, and strike them. Islamic legal tradition has long treated this verse as authorizing disciplinary striking.

The same pattern appears in modesty rules (Surah 24:31 and Surah 33:59) that place the burden of male lust primarily on women’s covering rather than on male self-control.

LEGAL AND FINANCIAL INFERIORITY

Surah 2:282 requires two women to testify alongside one man in financial matters so that if one forgets, the other can remind her. This rule treats a woman’s testimony as inherently less reliable.

Surah 4:11 assigns the male heir twice the share of the female. These are not side issues. They are structural features of Quranic law that have shaped inheritance and court testimony across centuries of Islamic practice.

POLYGAMY, DIVORCE, AND DEPENDENCE

Surah 4:3 permits a man to marry up to four wives if he believes he can deal justly with them, while Islamic tradition also preserved access to slave women and captives for male sexual use. Divorce remains far easier for the husband to initiate. The woman’s security stays tied to the husband’s continued favor.

THE BIBLICAL STANDARD THAT THE QURAN NEVER REACHES

Scripture begins with Genesis 1:27: both male and female created in the image of Jehovah. Marriage is a one-flesh covenant (Genesis 2:24), not a hierarchy of ownership. The New Testament commands husbands to love their wives as Christ loved the congregation and gave Himself up for her (Ephesians 5:25) and to honor them as fellow heirs of the gracious gift of life (1 Peter 3:7).

Galatians 3:28 affirms equal standing in Christ without erasing created distinctions. The Bible never grants men permission to strike their wives, never discounts a woman’s testimony by half, and never presents polygamy as the ideal pattern established by God. Jesus returned marriage to the creation order of one man and one woman joined by Jehovah (Matthew 19:4-6).

REAL-WORLD CONSEQUENCES

When the Quran is treated as the perfect, final revelation, these teachings produce lasting patterns of female subordination, restricted rights, and male entitlement in marriage, law, and public life. The oppression is not an accident of culture. It flows directly from the text. A book that places women under a permanent “degree” of male authority while claiming moral perfection cannot reflect the righteous character of Jehovah.

The contrast is clear and irreconcilable. One system elevates women to equal dignity before God while maintaining created distinctions. The other embeds male dominance into the very structure of revelation.
