Gorakhpur journalist Parvez Parwaz recorded Yogi Adityanath’s speech at a public meeting in 2007.
Parvez Parwaz later made repeated attempts to file a complaint against Adityanath, but amid legal complications that dragged on for years, his voice gradually faded away, and on Sunday he died in Gorakhpur jail.
Parvez Parwaz was passing in front of Gorakhpur railway station when his eyes fell on a large crowd gathered near the statue of Maharana Pratap. It was 27 January 2007. Evening was beginning to fall. He saw that Bharatiya Janata Party’s Gorakhpur MP Adityanath, dressed in his saffron robes, was delivering an inflammatory speech, and people in the crowd were raising slogans of praise from time to time in excitement. Parvez knew that recently, during the Muharram procession, there had been a clash somewhere in the city in which a Hindu boy was injured and later died. Considerable tension had spread because of this incident. He told 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙘𝙖𝙧𝙖𝙫𝙖𝙣, “𝘚𝘦𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘰𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘢𝘵𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘱𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦, 𝘐 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘭𝘪𝘱 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘤𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘥.” The crowd mainly consisted of members of the Hindu Yuva Vahini. Adityanath had formed this organisation of young men about five years earlier. Parvez always kept a camera with him, and with the help of that camera he began recording Adityanath’s speech.
In an impassioned manner, Adityanath said, “In the coming time, for the blood of one Hindu, we will not get an FIR registered against the administration, but will instead have at least 10 such people killed.” The crowd applauded in excitement.
As soon as Adityanath’s speech ended, Parvez quietly returned home, but the city had begun to boil. Sunil Singh told 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙘𝙖𝙧𝙖𝙫𝙖𝙣, “𝘌𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘣𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘈𝘥𝘪𝘵𝘺𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘩’𝘴 𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘦𝘤𝘩 𝘩𝘢𝘥 𝘦𝘥𝘦𝘥, 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘢𝘤𝘬𝘦𝘥 𝘢 𝘩𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘭 𝘯𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘦𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘥.” At that time, Sunil Singh was the state president of the Hindu Yuva Vahini and was Adityanath’s right-hand man. He is also an accused in this case. He had addressed the crowd immediately before Adityanath’s speech. He told 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙘𝙖𝙧𝙖𝙫𝙖𝙣, “𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘩𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘭 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘢 𝘭𝘰𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘔𝘶𝘴𝘭𝘪𝘮. 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘪𝘰𝘵 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘴𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘎𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘬𝘩𝘱𝘶𝘳.” In this riot, at least two people were killed and property worth crores was burnt to ashes.
Years later, Parvez Parwaz was convicted in a separate criminal case and sentenced to life imprisonment in 2020, and in October 2026 he died in Gorakhpur jail.
Gorakhpur District Jail Superintendent V.K. Pandey said, “𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘷𝘦𝘻 𝘩𝘢𝘥 𝘴𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘩 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘣𝘭𝘦𝘮𝘴, 𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘭𝘶𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘩𝘪𝘨𝘩 𝘣𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘴. 𝘖𝘯 𝘚𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘥𝘢𝘺 𝘯𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵, 𝘩𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘥 𝘥𝘪𝘧𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘺 𝘣𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘢𝘧𝘵𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘢𝘬𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘵 𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘭, 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘪𝘦𝘥.”
