@brownecfm UK had covid & brexit at ~ same time. Both now publicly taboo as you describe. Common factors? Both v. unpleasant in various ways. Both deeply lastingly divisive, in party politics & in society. Any mention now often shunned, with (often genuine) fear of resuming an old feud.
@obrienmark@EmporersNewC Cheltenham Symphony Orchestra gives not one but TWO performances of The Planets for Cheltonian Holstโs 150th birthday: 12 Oct in Gloucester Cathedral; 19 Oct in Cheltenham Town Hall. @CSOrch https://t.co/LFpM1TuKxy
We cannot let this pass. Douglas Murray doesn't care what we think, but we need to exert pressure on @Telegraph and @spectator. How can they employ a man who writes such incendiary rhetoric. If they continue to employ Murray they are effectively condoning what he says
Stopping the criminal activity of rioters has been a textbook example of how the criminal justice system can demonstrate that criminals do not enjoy any impunity for their actions even when they feel empowered by being part of a mob. Central to it has been the speed with which accused are brought to justice.
The problem however is that this does not at present extend beyond dealing with the latest riots. For most crime there are massive delays in delivering justice, unfair to victims and accused alike. Worse it also induces a disconnect between the committing of crime and the consequence to criminals of doing so and diminishes public trust in the state's ability to enable them to live their lives in peace and protect them from harm.
The problem goes back years and can be laid at the door of all governments for systemic underfunding of the criminal justice system.
A real test for Keir Starmer must be whether he is willing and able to find the policies and resources to address this.
Freedom under law and the delivery of justice are the original "social service" delivered by the state which is why they feature in the King's medieval coronation oath. Government not delivering on this is a fundamental failure and undermines confidence in the benefits of democracy and the rule of law.
@cfmmuk@SkyNews Thatโs very specific. I think โAllahu akbarโ is part of the liturgy. Are there any other parts of the liturgy that should be treated similarly?
