Huge shout-out to my co-authors (@csanti412, @YaWenChenMSSM, Seth, @BobbyJEyeGuy, and Twitter-less others) for their support in this work! Thanks for reading to the end of this thread😆 Excited to discuss and explore what’s next in the field! ✨✨ (8/8)
Excited to see my PhD work is now published @CellReports! In this study, we used human retinal organoids to investigate how cell death occurs and affects the development and survival of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), the projection neurons in the eye (1/8) https://t.co/pC28z4vKWY
Further analysis shows blocking apoptosis does not extend the RGC generation window, but slows early neurogenesis and maturation. It also prolongs RGC lifespan and improves mature RGC survival in organoids, exhibiting more complex effects on RGC development than expected. (7/8)
Blocking apoptosis promotes survival and alters developmental dynamics of human retinal ganglion cells in retinal organoids https://t.co/GNQEx15S1w #biorxiv_devbio
New #preprint‼️Excited to share my PhD work, in which we characterize waves of cell death during human retinal development, and show how blocking apoptosis promotes RGC long-term survival and alters their developmental dynamics in #organoids. Check this out:

Human retinas/organoids go through 2 apoptotic waves. Organoids also have a necrotic wave. Blocking apoptosis promotes RGC survival to day 200 (usually die!). Apoptosis promotes normal neurogenesis/maturation
My first-author PhD thesis work is published in @Nature ! 🧬🔬🎉 I’m beyond grateful for this moment and for everyone who supported me! @NeurosurgUCSF@OkadaLabUCSF1@josephcostell14@KlebanoffLab
RNA Splicing aberrations generate tumor-wide neoantigens! https://t.co/z8dGr9n9cI
EXCITED to share my PhD work in @CellCellPress. We found that the chance of developing metastasis is partly decided by the DNA we inherited. We identified a germline variant in PCSK9 present in 70% of the white women conferring higher risk of breast cancer metastasis. (1/9)
Heading out of town for 2024 #cshlbrain at @cshlmeetings to dive into the fascinating world of brain organoids! Happy to chat about my research on protecting human retinal ganglion cells, and to explore how to remake connections between the eye and the brain in vitro! 👁️🤝🧠
If you're at #ISER2024, come out to my talk on Thursday Oct 24, where I'll describe our "hourglass hypothesis" for extrinsic control of retinal developmental timing.
Session: Early retinal development and patterning
Time: 8:48
