Kyle MacLachlan pays tribute to David Lynch:
“His love for me and mine for him came out of the cosmic fate of two people who saw the best things about themselves in each other. I will miss him more than the limits of my language can tell and my heart can bear. My world is that much fuller because I knew him and that much emptier now that he’s gone.”

Congratulations Dr @aiphilip whose PhD, ‘We Tattooed your Mother: Agential Realism, Filmic Realism and Documentary Practice’ was passed by Sarah Cooper (King’s College) and Kiki Yu (Queen Mary). The supervisors Cecilia Mello (São Paulo) & @NagibLucia are delighted, as are we all!
Gisèle Pelicot finished taking the stand in mass rape trial against 51 men, and said the "macho, patriarchal society that trivialises rape" must change. What this woman has done for history and women is astounding, her courage unfathomable, no honour is too great. MERCI 💙🤍♥️

1. I’m sorry to return to this question, but I think it hints at everything that's wrong with our media and public conversations.
*When did you last hear a critique of capitalism on the BBC?*
A thread/
One thing we simply cannot tolerate from any takeover is the senior management team who have driven Royal Mail into the ground making millions from selling their shares they have been handed for ‘performance’.
RT if you think this is an absolute disgrace and must be stopped.
Absolutely catastrophic news for the @ucu. Five more years of inept, divisive, and toxic leadership. I'm so utterly and profoundly disappointed.
UUK and UCEA will be drinking the fancy champagne tonight!
It was a historic win for workers yesterday, & an important day for our union UCU on USS pensions. Finally, we have inked getting back our pensions which were unfairly cut by circa 40%. (Yes... 40%) and we have inked compensation. As chair of the union side,I feel a curious mix of relief, pain and elation. My fellow negotiators and I have seen close-up, not just the big battles but many, many a slip between the cup and the lip. Some thoughts....
- It has taken many sacrifices- often by those who were least able to give- to get us this win. While we have secured a measure of just compensation, there are some losses that money just cannot restore or recover. Those taking action have been weary along the way; in some ways we have grown stronger in having had to fight so hard to simply regain what was reasonably ours.
- Exploitation & rancid power-play must be actively opposed. Leaving these to fester only makes them worse.
- In the USS matter, such exploitation has often been enabled by wilful ignorance, the suspension of critical thinking, and the proliferation of modern day propaganda techniques. These are absolutely pernicious and will not stop by themselves.
- Resisting them requires us to trust in ourselves and in the power of collective organising.
- It certainly not easy to find or keep our nerve, particularly when others are losing ground or when we are being persuaded that things are so bad we must settle for small change. It is "easier to live in the world they’ve been given than to explore the power they have to change it."
- Calls for pragmatism in these circumstances can (sometimes) be employed to disguise or even prey on cowardice, fear and/or laziness. "The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don't have any."
- We have had to deal those who aren't just powerful in themselves but also deeply motivated & skilled at safeguarding that power.
- It takes conviction and unrelenting action to win anything meaningful. "Power in defense of freedom is greater than power in behalf of tyranny and oppression, because power, real power, comes from our conviction which produces action, uncompromising action."
- Great grassroots activism can be deeply undermined by cowardly lack of leadership. Great leadership can achieve nothing without the power of our members. It's important that we pay attention to the upcoming general secretary and NEC elections in our union, as well as on building grassroots engagement.
- If we never fight and only ever save our firepower for another day, we will keep waiting for justice. It's important to recognise that those who deprive us of our just rights, have no intention to simply hand these over to us.“I knew then and I know now, when it comes to justice, there is no easy way to get it.” On this note, I must commend our casualised members and students, many of whom bore a huge cost in this struggle.
- Simply making good arguments against nonsensical approaches, or 'calling out' injustice wont deliver justice. Courage and credible action matter.
- Your negotiating team will continue to work hard to join you not just in safeguarding our pensions, but in building our union and building a better education. We have now helped marshal a historic win but we "had no idea that history was being made."... We were "just tired of giving up.”

Lovely weather for voting in the UCU election ☀️ We had a great time together chuckling about the claims in Jo Grady's manifesto and voting against her and her supporters 👍 #couplegoals
