NPD is to humans what persistent hallucination is to a model: internal coherence preserved at the cost of the thing the system was originally for.

It’s not every day that one gets to listen to a former British Prime Minister recite from memory the opening passages of The Iliad in Ancient Greek, with no notes, in response to a random question from an undergraduate—and all while wearing what appear to be Thomas The Tank Engine socks. But today was one such day.
My thanks to my good friend Brad LaMorgese for the opportunity to see the colorful and comic Boris Johnson speak tonight at the University of Dallas.
@Peter_Turchin I see no currently operating mechanism to prevent it, other than the obvious fact that the wealth pump carries within it the seeds of its own destruction.
The United States has managed to remove the dictator without major loss of life in Tehran; the regime killed tens of thousands of its own people, many of them were tortured to death by vile sadists. These are all well established facts that misanthropes in our midst ignore.
I for one am happy for the Iranian people and wish them every freedom and happiness that the world can bestow on them.
May all Iranians live to see the basic freedoms, dignity and respect that they richly deserve.
I hope this storied and ancient culture rises once again. I’d love to visit when this is all done and see the sights and meet the ordinary people of Iran as free people.
I really hope this all works out for them. They deserve so much better than what they have been put through these last 50 years. I also hope that the West treats them with respect after the current regime falls and we don’t repeat the mistakes of the 50’s and 60’s.
Don’t worry Carl, you’re not actually involved in the war. The UK has no part in it. This is a US Israeli joint operation being executed for a combination of US and Israeli reasons. From the point of view of a living room in Swindon, there’s no need for this: from Washington and Tel Aviv there is. Where you stand depends on where you sit.
A clear signal. I know a man in his early 20s who has extremely strong cognitive abilities (far beyond what's needed to be in the top percentile on standardized tests for verbal, mathematics, or general intelligence).
He has decided to go to trade school as his "life foundation" step, and he starts next week. He is very familiar with the SD model and has read extensively about it. IMO, he understands it very well.
He has used online resources to reach a level of cognitive sophistication far above that of the typical Bachelor's-level graduate — self-directed. Possible exceptions include a lack of formal university-level training in Math or Engineering; this can be addressed later if needed.
He does not need a devalued credential; he needs practical know-how and a robust skill set to face a changing world. Trade school will be the floor, not the ceiling.
@karenvaites@mattyglesias This phenomenon is not limited to Education although I do agree that it is particularly acute in this area. One thing to monitor is whether differences across school districts are emerging. I would expect large unionized districts to resist with all their might (LA?).
Succinct and accurate. I've been studying "off ramps" from this, and I don't see any really appealing ones yet. We're into civilizational harm-reduction at this point.
All empires since the Dutch have used capitalism to create a virtuous cycle that leads to an empire’s demise. What happens when an empire can no longer borrow the money necessary to repay its debts? History shows us that having too much debt during an economic downturn leads to a classic, self-reinforcing cycle where:
1) The empire can no longer borrow the money to repay its debts
2) It prints a lot of new money, which devalues the currency and raises inflation
3) Living standards decline, leading to the rise of political extremism
4) Turbulent economic conditions undermine productivity and there is conflict about how to divide the shrinking resources
5) Populist leaders emerge pledging to take control and bring about order
Ultimately, this failure to control the anarchy is when democracy is most at risk.

@cdixon I don't see any of this as being bullish for BTC, specifically. Your argument is infrastructural, not for ownership of a particular type of crypto. Or am I misunderstanding your argument?
