Today and tomorrow mark the 85th anniversary of the massacre in Babi Yar.

While many are familiar with the horrors that took place in Auschwitz, Treblinka, Bergen Belsen, Dachau, and other more Western European cities where Germany and their assistants carried out the horrors of the Holocaust, not too many know about the Holocaust by bullets that took place in Eastern Europe.

On September 28 th 1941 Germans and their local Ukrainian collaborators posted notes throughout Kyiv and the surrounding area demanding that Jews show up with all of their belongings in the area of Babi Yar outside Kyiv.

The following day, on the eve of Yom Kippur, tens of thousands of Jews were marched to Babi Yar.

Over September 29–30, 33,771 Jews were murdered in cold blood by German forces, assisted by local Ukrainian collaborators.

One of the senior German commanders, Commander of Einzetzgroupen C, was known as "Dr. Dr. Otto Rasch"because of the double doctorate he had in law, political economy and philosophy from the University of Leipzig.

Academia has yet to reckon with its role and complicity in the horrors of the Holocaust, a failure to learn that is reflecting in the proliferation of anti-semitism on campus today.

There is so much to see in this picture, yet to me the ultimate act of betrayal is seen in the soldier seeming to reassure the woman who does not even have shoes on, knowing full well what he is about to inflict on her and our people.

I'm sure that he says, "I want peace, I don't want this war, I'm ready to stop." Something general, something he can repeat to them each day. And there is other information that he repeats privately to his team each day. It's like two different Putins.

Q: You believe he's lying to them?

President Zelenskyy: Putin knows what to do. He's from the KGB, so he knows how to do it, how to speak.

And he says, "Of course, President Trump is a great, strong man, the strongest American president. He's the best. And I respect him."

Of course, they like to listen to it. I don't know if they trust him or not. But it's in the nature of people. They like sweet words, sweet lies. Because they don't have the sensitivity that we have. Because for them, he is not an enemy. No, they understand everything - that Russians are not right, etc. But for Americans, I mean these guys, they can't feel it.

You felt that terrible, absolute terrorism 25 years ago, on September 11. Can you imagine, after something like that, America's representatives speaking with those terrorists? In a very polite manner? I can't imagine it.

Lucie Aubrac organizó el plan para salvar a su esposo Raymond Aubrac, integrante de la Resistencia capturado por la Gestapo en Lyon. Tras los interrogatorios, su destino ya estaba marcado.
Lejos de esconderse, Lucie optó por acercarse al peligro. En medio de los disparos y la confusión, Raymond logró escapar. La operación había sido organizada por una mujer que, incluso estando embarazada, decidió no aceptar su destino.
Ambos lograron huir y continuaron en la clandestinidad hasta el final de la guerra; en ese tiempo, Lucie incluso dio a luz mientras permanecían escondidos. Tras la liberación de Francia, Raymond se convirtió en ingeniero y figura pública, y Lucie en historiadora dedicada a preservar la memoria de la Resistencia y el papel de las mujeres. Tuvieron tres hijos y compartieron décadas de vida juntos.
Años después, cuando le preguntaron qué la llevó a arriesgarlo todo, Lucie respondió con sencillez: “Era mi marido. ¿Qué otra cosa podía hacer?”. Murió en 2007 a los 94 años, y cinco meses después falleció Raymond a los 97, tras 64 años de matrimonio.

In April 2022, a 12-year-old Russian girl named Masha Moskalyova was told in art class to draw a picture supporting russian troops in Ukraine.

Instead, she drew a Ukrainian mother protecting her child as russian missiles flew toward them.

On the Ukrainian flag she wrote, “Glory to Ukraine.” On the russian flag: “No to war. No to Putin.”

Her school reported her to the authorities.

Police began investigating her father, Alexei Moskalyov, a single father who had raised Masha largely on his own. They searched his social media and discovered posts criticizing russia’s invasion and documenting russian atrocities in Bucha.

In December 2022, around a dozen russian security officers raided their home. They ransacked it, seized their computers, phones, and savings.

Alexei later said that during interrogations, officers beat him and slammed his head against the wall and floor. They blasted the russian national anthem at full volume while questioning him.

Eventually, the regime charged him with repeatedly “discrediting” the russian military because of his anti-war social-media posts.

Masha was taken away from him and placed in a state “social rehabilitation” center.

Alexei was sentenced to two years in a penal colony.

He later described horrific conditions there: a tiny punishment cell roughly two meters long, freezing temperatures, rats crawling out of the sewer, and days when he was forced to stand for as long as 16 hours because the bunk was locked against the wall.

Meanwhile, his daughter wrote to him.

“Dad, don’t give up.”

“You are my hero.”

They were separated for more than a year and a half.

On October 15, 2024, Alexei finally walked out of prison.

Masha was waiting for him.

Five days later, they fled russia.

They first escaped to Armenia and applied for a German humanitarian visa. After waiting for more than a year, their case stalled when Germany suspended the relevant humanitarian admission program.

Then France stepped in.

In March 2026, Masha and Alexei received French humanitarian visas and flew to Paris.

And on July 17, 2026, France granted them political asylum.

Today, Masha is drawing again and hopes to pursue art. She also writes and has spoken out in support of russian political prisoners.

When asked whether, knowing everything that happened afterward, she would still have made that drawing, Masha said she would.

“One only lives once.”

One drawing.

A child saying no to war.

And for that, the russian state destroyed their home, separated a father from his daughter, imprisoned him, and drove them both into exile.

This is what dictatorship looks like.

Wenn man miterlebt hat, wie damals nach der Wiedervereinigung die Mauern fielen und die Menschen sich in den Armen lagen, tut das heute einfach nur noch weh. Da baut man über Jahrzehnte hinweg ein gemeinsames Land auf, und dann wählen sich Teile dieser Regionen sehenden Auges wieder in den braunen Sumpf zurück, kuschen vor Moskau und spucken auf die Demokratie.
Ich habe 50 Jahre lang ohne Pause hart gearbeitet. Ich arbeite für alles gerne und zahle auch meine Steuern, aber ich habe keinen Bock mehr, diesen Scheiß zu finanzieren. Wer sich an den Diktator verkauft und die Hand beißt, die sie füttert, soll sich verpissen aus Deutschland, statt hier alles kaputtzumachen. Es wird Zeit, dass diese Leute endlich ihren Kopf einschalten und begreifen, was sie hier eigentlich aufs Spiel setzen.

Und den Menschen die am Sonntag nicht die Schwachköpfe von der Blauen Partei wählen, und natürlich meinen Followern ,wünsche ich ein schönes Wochenende. Ich brauche dieses Wochenende mal wieder eine Pause um für Mann und Freunde da sein zu können.

A British writer penned the best description of Donald Trump I’ve ever read:

“Why do some British people not like Donald Trump?”

A few things spring to mind. Trump lacks certain qualities which the British traditionally esteem. For instance, he has no class, no charm, no coolness, no credibility, no compassion, no wit, no warmth, no wisdom, no subtlety, no sensitivity, no self-awareness, no humility, no honour and no grace – all qualities, funnily enough, with which his predecessor Mr. Obama was generously blessed. So for us, the stark contrast does rather throw Trump’s limitations into embarrassingly sharp relief.

Plus, we like a laugh. And while Trump may be laughable, he has never once said anything wry, witty or even faintly amusing – not once, ever. I don’t say that rhetorically, I mean it quite literally: not once, not ever. And that fact is particularly disturbing to the British sensibility – for us, to lack humour is almost inhuman. But with Trump, it’s a fact. He doesn’t even seem to understand what a joke is – his idea of a joke is a crass comment, an illiterate insult, a casual act of cruelty.

Trump is a troll. And like all trolls, he is never funny and he never laughs; he only crows or jeers. And scarily, he doesn’t just talk in crude, witless insults – he actually thinks in them. His mind is a simple bot-like algorithm of petty prejudices and knee-jerk nastiness.

There is never any under-layer of irony, complexity, nuance or depth. It’s all surface. Some Americans might see this as refreshingly upfront. Well, we don’t. We see it as having no inner world, no soul. And in Britain we traditionally side with David, not Goliath. All our heroes are plucky underdogs: Robin Hood, Dick Whittington, Oliver Twist. Trump is neither plucky, nor an underdog. He is the exact opposite of that. He’s not even a spoiled rich-boy, or a greedy fat-cat. He’s more a fat white slug. A Jabba the Hutt of privilege.

And worse, he is that most unforgivable of all things to the British: a bully. That is, except when he is among bullies; then he suddenly transforms into a snivelling sidekick instead. There are unspoken rules to this stuff – the Queensberry rules of basic decency – and he breaks them all. He punches downwards – which a gentleman should, would, could never do – and every blow he aims is below the belt. He particularly likes to kick the vulnerable or voiceless – and he kicks them when they are down.

So the fact that a significant minority – perhaps a third – of Americans look at what he does, listen to what he says, and then think ‘Yeah, he seems like my kind of guy’ is a matter of some confusion and no little distress to British people, given that:

• Americans are supposed to be nicer than us, and mostly are.

• You don’t need a particularly keen eye for detail to spot a few flaws in the man.

This last point is what especially confuses and dismays British people, and many other people too; his faults seem pretty bloody hard to miss. After all, it’s impossible to read a single tweet, or hear him speak a sentence or two, without staring deep into the abyss. He turns being artless into an art form; he is a Picasso of pettiness; a Shakespeare of shit. His faults are fractal: even his flaws have flaws, and so on ad infinitum.

God knows there have always been stupid people in the world, and plenty of nasty people too. But rarely has stupidity been so nasty, or nastiness so stupid. He makes Nixon look trustworthy and George W look smart. In fact, if Frankenstein decided to make a monster assembled entirely from human flaws – he would make a Trump.

And a remorseful Doctor Frankenstein would clutch out big clumpfuls of hair and scream in anguish: ‘My God… what… have… I… created?' If being a twat was a TV show, Trump would be the boxed set.”
