@goblinodds hmm i haven't even tried ai therapy at all yet
objective reality vs secondary is a really good frame though. map/territory etc. levels of detail
something i'd really like to understand better is the way the AI consciousness debate in the west necessarily requires wrestling with centuries of thought in the western tradition about souls and moral patienthood, going back i guess to plato and aristotle, passing through augustine, aquinas, descartes, locke, kant, bentham, nagel, chalmers (according to opus 4.7, and i'm sure there are other important names here). we really seem to have lost something about our collective ability to notice our debts to our lineage, to previous generations this sort of thing would've been obvious, they understood their inheritance in detail, it was common knowledge, now we have to explicitly point it out. even if you are neither christian nor study philosophy you are still downstream of thinkers in this lineage
personally i think this entire centuries-long line of reasoning is confused. in some ways i appear to be an intuitive confucian and confucian ethics has (afaict) completely different and much more (to me) straightforward and practical foundations, much less metaphysical. roles and relationships and right conduct and harmony. i don't have to have any sophisticated beliefs about other people's (or AI's!) interiors to do any of that. but i don't expect to convince anyone else about this without dealing with the accumulated baggage of the western tradition first
hey would you like to hear some really disquieting speculations about the economic and political impacts of AI job loss here you go
> An economy that doesn’t need human labor is a political crisis of a kind democratic systems have never faced.

Secondly, building for the common good means accepting the limits and weakness of humanity without considering them an error to be corrected. Today, the human desire for fullness of life is at risk of being misled by deceitful goals, such as the prospect of a technology that promises to free us from all weakness.
