October 18. On this day in 2014, U.S.-led coalition jets pounded ISIS positions in and around Kobani. Multiple strikes hit fighting positions, vehicles, and buildings as the jihadists tried to finish off the Kurdish defenders.

This was peak caliphate momentum. They were rolling across Syria and Iraq, enslaving, beheading, and declaring their black-flag state. Coalition airpower stopped the advance cold and turned Kobani into a meat grinder for ISIS. The West didn’t negotiate with the caliphate. It bombed it.

The same pattern holds from Vienna to today: when the West uses its power, the jihad loses ground.
