Former finance secretary unpacks how IDBI Bank privatisation was designed to benefit just one party by avoiding genuine competitive bids. It was a predesigned single horse race. He said a genuine competitive bidding should have got atleast double the price for the government!
Everything (process, which results in making it a single horse race, price, which is atrociously low, government officers sitting on both sides) is wrong with IDBI bank sale. It is a black chapter in India’s public asset privatisation history. https://t.co/mixWRDQA3b via @YouTube

Fairfax has said IDBI's excess capital can buy Fairfax's own Go Digit & IIFL stakes at market prices. Bank's money → buyer's group companies. Put an independent valuation in the public domain first.

Reserve price was ₹94.42 → both bids came below it → process shelved → fresh sealed bid opened → old reserve quietly dropped. That’s not price discovery. #RollBackIDBISale
At the original ₹94.42 reserve, government + LIC would have got ~₹8,760 crore more for the 60.72% stake. Someone decided to leave that money on the table.

IDBI's CRAR 26.65% vs HDFC Bank's 19.71% → that extra ~₹15,500 crore cushion, built with taxpayer & LIC money and five years of employee-earned profit, goes to the buyer at 1.56x book. A bonanza, not a bargain. #RollBackIDBISale

SBI can easily takeover IDBI Bank with 2 Quarters of Net Profit to became more bigger, but move of Modi Cabinet to sell a Profitable Bank to foreign hands is beyond justification.
Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited is set to acquire 60.72% of IDBI Bank for ₹52,878 crore. But a key part of its funding plan raises a bigger question: could IDBI end up helping finance its own takeover?
In ‘Is Fairfax Buying IDBI With IDBI’s Own Money?’, Palak Shah examines Fairfax chairman Prem Watsa’s comments to investors about IDBI potentially buying stakes in Go Digit General, Go Digit Life and IIFL Capital at market prices.
Fairfax president Peter Clarke valued the contribution of these three businesses at approximately $3 billion around ₹28,300 crore, or 54% of the proposed acquisition price. Fairfax has included this contribution among the potential sources of funding for the IDBI deal.
The proposed transactions are not final and remain subject to regulatory approvals. But they raise important questions about independent valuations, RBI investment limits, the use of IDBI’s capital and the interests of its minority shareholders.
The central question is not just what Fairfax is buying, but who ultimately pays for it.
