New paper in Health Affairs: In 2020, #Medicare began covering #methadone for the first time. The great news is over half of beneficiaries reside in counties with an opioid treatment program that now accepts Medicare! ⬇️⬇️⬇️
In their new @Health_Affairs paper, @sjharrisphd of @JohnsHopkinsSPH + coauthors used 2021 data from the National Directory of Drug and Alcohol Abuse Treatment Facilities to examine county-level factors associated with OTPs accepting Medicare. https://t.co/gWt7Q53mSh
The not great news, >20 million beneficiaries lived in a county with no OTPs that accepted Medicare, half of which had no other access to specialty facilities that accepted Medicare and offered any MOUD. While promising, geographic disparities persist. It's time to #freemethadone
